That establishes at least one million certified album units for each in the United States—not one million traditional copies sold worldwide. RIAA album awards count streams and downloads as well as sales, so the distinction matters.
What “sold over a million” means here
There is no single worldwide ledger in the cited sources that counts only physical albums and paid downloads for every Weeknd release. The best-supported answer is therefore a list based on U.S. RIAA album certifications, not a ranking of global copies sold.
The RIAA’s album-award formula, announced in 2016, counts 1,500 on-demand audio and/or video song streams as the equivalent of 10 track sales or one album sale for award calculations. As a result, a certification level reflects eligible consumption under that methodology, rather than a count of albums physically or digitally purchased. RIAA Gold & Platinum
The Weeknd albums with multi-platinum RIAA records
| Album | RIAA record supported by the cited sources | What the record establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Beauty Behind the Madness (2015) | Two-times platinum in February 2016; three-times platinum in April 2016 | At least one million U.S. certified album units; the cited award history reached three-times platinum by April 2016. |
| Trilogy (2012) | Multi-platinum certification in March 2016; the specific level is not stated in the cited summary of the RIAA record. | At least one million U.S. certified album units by March 2016. |
| Starboy (2016) | Two-times platinum in June 2017 | At least two million U.S. certified album units as of that award record. |
The dates are part of the evidence: they describe historical award records, not necessarily each album’s present-day certification level. You can check album entries through the RIAA Gold & Platinum database.

A separate UK figure for Beauty Behind the Madness
The Official Charts Company reported more than 595,000 UK chart sales for Beauty Behind the Madness and described it as The Weeknd’s biggest album in the UK by chart sales at the time of its report. The report excerpt does not show a publication year. This is a UK, point-in-time chart-sales figure—not a worldwide total, and not directly comparable with RIAA certified units. What this list does—and does not—show
- It identifies three albums whose cited RIAA records crossed the million-unit certification threshold in the United States.
- It does not prove that each album sold a million physical or download copies, or that each crossed a million traditional sales worldwide.
- It does not show that other Weeknd albums failed to reach a million sales. The cited records establish only the albums and award history listed above.
- Certification levels and cumulative chart-sales figures can change; each number should be read with its stated award or report date.
