The phone behind the headline was the Teracube 2e, a $99 Android handset announced on October 6, 2020. Its removable battery, claimed glue-free construction and promised replacement parts made it look unusually repair-friendly for its time. But the iFixit praise was a prediction—not an iFixit teardown or score.
What the headline was about
Teracube presented the 2e as its second phone through an Indiegogo pre-order campaign, with an advertised price of $99 and expected December 2020 shipping. The launch coverage described it as a sustainability-minded budget phone with a four-year premium-care warranty for buyers in several countries, including the United States and Canada.
The original story appeared on October 6, 2020. It said iFixit had not yet ranked the device. “Should undoubtedly love” was therefore the writer’s inference from Teracube’s design claims, not an independent repairability certification.
Why the Teracube 2e looked repairable
Removable battery
A swappable battery can extend a phone’s useful life without replacing the entire handset. It also avoids the specialized heating, prying and adhesive removal often required on modern sealed phones. That advantage depends on compatible, safe batteries remaining available.

Claimed glue-free construction
The launch account said Teracube claimed no glue was used in manufacturing. Less adhesive can make access easier and reduce the chance of damaging parts during disassembly. It does not make repair effortless: clips, screws, shields, connectors and flex cables can still break, and the available evidence does not include an independent teardown confirming the claim.
Promised replacement parts
Teracube’s launch messaging said replacement parts would be readily available. That is crucial because theoretical repairability has little practical value if screens, charging boards, cameras or batteries cannot be bought. Current parts inventory and long-term availability have not been established.

These are launch-era specifications reported in 2020, not a description of a competitive new phone in 2026.

| Component | Teracube 2e launch specification |
|---|---|
| Display | 6.1-inch HD+ IPS, 720 × 1560 |
| Processor | MediaTek Helio A25 octa-core |
| Memory and storage | 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, microSD slot |
| Cameras | 13MP primary rear camera and 8MP wide-angle rear camera |
| Battery | 4,000mAh, advertised as swappable |
| Connectivity and features | Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, fingerprint reader, headphone jack, USB-C, dual-SIM and LTE on GSM networks |
| Software | Android 10 with Google Play support |
The combination of a headphone jack, microSD slot, NFC, dual-SIM support and USB-C was useful at this price. None of those features, however, resolves the phone’s age, battery wear or future software compatibility.
Which claims are verified—and which are not?
| Launch claim | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|
| Removable battery | Reported as part of Teracube’s launch design; a hands-on teardown is not included in the available evidence. |
| No glue | Teracube’s claim as reported by Droid Life; not independently confirmed here. |
| Replacement parts readily available | Launch promise; present-day supply is not established. |
| Near-perfect iFixit result | Prediction only. No iFixit score or endorsement is verified. |
| Four-year premium-care warranty | Advertised for eligible countries at launch. A 2020 purchase would generally have reached the end of a four-year term by 2024, subject to the actual warranty start date and terms. |
The launch article also mentioned a biodegradable case. That is a materials claim, not proof that the phone itself is durable, recyclable or repairable in every respect.
The software reality in 2026
A Teracube community post documents Android 14.1.0 builds for two hardware batches: the first-batch Zirconia (2020) and second-batch Emerald (2021). It lists an August 5, 2025 security-patch level. That is the latest patch level documented in the available source, not a promise of continuing support through 2026.

- Made from the high quality tempered-glass for maximum scratch protection and no residue when removed
- 2.5D rounded edge glass for comfort on the fingers and hand
- 9H hardness, 99.99% HD clarity, and maintains the original touch experience
- Hydrophobic and oleo-phobic coating to reduce sweat and reduce fingerprints
- Include 3 pcs tempered glass screen protectors
The same post says both 2020/2021 models fail Google Play Integrity because a third-party vendor’s keybox was leaked and subsequently revoked. Depending on the app, that can affect banking, payments, DRM, enterprise security or other integrity-sensitive functions. Community software work is not equivalent to a current manufacturer support commitment.
What a local update involves
The documented process is more involved than an ordinary over-the-air update:
- Identify whether the handset is the Zirconia or Emerald batch.
- Back up the phone completely, including anything on the microSD card.
- Free at least 6GB of internal storage and charge the battery to at least 50%.
- Place the correct update package on internal storage.
- Open Settings → System → Updater.
- Use the three-dot menu, choose Local update, select the package and reboot when prompted.
The community instructions warn that the updater can crash, first boot may take several minutes, launcher layouts can be lost, SD cards may need reformatting, and APN settings may need resetting if mobile data fails. Do not attempt this without a backup and a recovery plan.

Availability and network checks
The original campaign remains a legacy Indiegogo page at Indiegogo, but no current retail price or active new inventory is established. Teracube’s current site emphasizes the Thrive child-focused phone rather than the 2e: myteracube.com. Its support portal still hosts legacy documentation and tickets at support2.myteracube.com, but that does not prove old warranty claims remain active.
Treat a listing as used, refurbished or old campaign stock unless the seller proves otherwise. The launch specification describes LTE on GSM networks. An AT&T document lists the Teracube 2E as supporting HD Voice after a required software update, but that does not guarantee service with every carrier in 2026. Check supported LTE bands, VoLTE or HD Voice activation, carrier whitelisting, SIM requirements and the seller’s return policy. The AT&T reference is AT&T’s device capability document.

As a right-to-repair experiment
Yes, potentially. The removable battery and claimed low-adhesive design make it an interesting early attempt to challenge glued-shut smartphone conventions. It is best viewed as a historical example, not as independently certified proof of excellent repairability.

As a cheap backup phone
Only after hands-on checks. Test the battery for swelling, heat, rapid drain and sudden shutdowns; verify the display, touch layer, USB-C port, cameras, NFC, fingerprint reader, speaker and headphone jack; and confirm SIM registration, LTE and VoLTE before the return window closes.
As a primary phone in 2026
Generally no. The hardware dates from 2020, current new-stock availability is unverified, the original warranty is not a dependable current benefit, parts supply is uncertain, and the documented Play Integrity failure can disrupt important apps.
Used-buying checklist
- Confirm the exact batch: 2020 Zirconia or 2021 Emerald.
- Inspect the battery and rear cover for swelling, damage or poor contact.
- Check the Android version and security-patch date.
- Test charging, cellular calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and both SIM slots.
- Check whether the apps you need object to Play Integrity failure.
- Verify LTE bands and VoLTE support with your carrier, including the consequences of local 3G shutdowns.
- Require a meaningful return period and do not assume a legacy warranty transfers.
Verdict
The Teracube 2e deserved attention because it put a removable battery, a claimed glue-free build and parts availability at the center of a $99 phone in 2020. But “iFixit should undoubtedly love it” was enthusiastic commentary, not an iFixit score. In 2026, the 2e is mainly an interesting repairability experiment or niche used handset. Its aging hardware, uncertain parts supply, past warranty and Play Integrity problems make it a poor general recommendation.
