There is not enough verified evidence to name ten “oldest” car manufacturers still in business and rank them fairly. The answer depends on what counts as a manufacturer’s start: an earlier family business, the beginning of car production, a brand’s creation, or the formation of the present company. Mercedes-Benz’s history illustrates the problem: Benz and Daimler developed automobiles in 1886, while the predecessor companies joined to form Daimler-Benz AG in 1926. Those dates describe different milestones, not one unchanged company operating under the same name since 1886.
Why “oldest car manufacturer” needs a clear definition
A date can mark the start of a business that later entered the car industry, the first documented automobile work or production, the creation of a car brand, or the formation of a current legal company. These are not interchangeable measures of age.

There is a second distinction: a company’s historical lineage is not proof that one legal entity has operated continuously since its earliest predecessor. To make a defensible ranking, each candidate needs a date measured by the same rule, evidence of succession where a predecessor is counted, and evidence that the qualifying manufacturer remains active today.

Benz and Daimler: automobile work in 1886, merger in 1926
Mercedes-Benz Group dates the simultaneous development of automobiles by Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz to 1886. Its history says the predecessor companies later merged to form Daimler-Benz AG in 1926. Carl Benz applied for a patent for his gas-powered vehicle on January 29, 1886; the company describes the patent as the automobile’s “birth certificate.” The car’s first public outing was reported in July that year.
#1 Best Overall
The distinction matters for the name as well as the company. The official history describes Mercedes-Benz as emerging from the 1926 joining of the historic Benz and Daimler lines. So 1886 is a supported date for automotive origins in those lineages; it is not, without qualification, the formation date of the Mercedes-Benz-named company or brand.
Peugeot and Tatra: different dates, not yet comparable claims
Secondary references give two different kinds of dates for each of these candidates. One puts the Peugeot family business in 1810 and the creation of Automobiles Peugeot in 1896. Another gives Tatra company origins as 1850 and automobile manufacture as 1897. The dates may be useful leads, but they do not establish a like-for-like ranking: an antecedent business date is not the same milestone as a car-manufacturing start date. The available material also does not establish corporate continuity or current qualifying operation for either case.

What a reliable ranking would need to show
A list of ten can be meaningful only if it applies one definition consistently. For every entry, readers should be able to see the milestone being dated and the evidence behind both the history and the present-day status.
- One age rule: for example, first documented car production, rather than a mix of family-business origins and brand launch dates.
- A source for the milestone: preferably a primary company history that identifies what the date represents.
- A succession trail: if the date belongs to a predecessor, documentation connecting it to the present manufacturer.
- Evidence of current operation: a current company or brand source showing that the qualifying business remains active.
The available evidence supports a carefully qualified account of Benz and Daimler’s automotive origins, and surfaces Peugeot and Tatra as candidates with differing origin and production dates. It does not verify ten manufacturers, establish a common date rule across them, or support a reliable oldest-to-newest order. That is an evidence limit, not proof that a properly sourced list could never be assembled.
