ESPN reported that price included the buyer’s premium. The sale was described at the time as a public-auction record for a basketball card—not as a current record.
What was the $3.12 million Luka Doncic card?
The card was a 2018-19 Panini National Treasures rookie patch autograph, commonly shortened to RPA. It was numbered one of one and paired an on-card Doncic autograph with an NBA shield logo patch. ESPN described the patch as player-worn; Forbes identified it as the Panini National Treasures Luka Doncic Rookie NBA Logoman Patch Auto 1-of-1.
ESPN reported the November 2022 auction price as $3.12 million including the buyer’s premium. Forbes and CBS Sports identified PWCC Marketplace as the auction venue. ESPN, Forbes, and CBS Sports covered the sale in November 2022.
Why do reports also mention a $4.6 million sale?
ESPN and CBS Sports reported that the same card had previously sold in a private transaction for $4.6 million in March 2021. That figure refers to a reported private sale, not the November 2022 auction.

The two amounts should not be treated as directly interchangeable market prices: one was reported as a private transaction and the other as a public auction, with ESPN specifying that the auction total included buyer’s premium. The reports do not establish the seller’s proceeds after fees, so the figures alone do not show what either seller ultimately received.
Was it the most expensive basketball card?
At the time, ESPN and CBS Sports described the $3.12 million result as the highest price paid for a basketball card at public auction. That is a historical claim from November 2022, not a verified current ranking. Without current, comparable auction data, it would be inaccurate to call it today’s record.

When comparing reported card-sale prices, check the exact card and serial number, sale date, whether the transaction was a public auction or private sale, and whether the reported amount includes buyer’s premium. Those details distinguish the 2022 auction from the earlier private transaction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the sale establish about the card’s value?
It establishes that one buyer paid a reported $3.12 million including buyer’s premium for this particular one-of-one card at a public auction in 2022. It does not establish a current value for the card, a typical price for Doncic rookie cards, or a market-wide investment trend. The contemporaneous reports do not identify the buyer, seller proceeds after fees, card grade, or authentication chain.

CBS Sports quoted Jesse Craig, then identified as PWCC Marketplace’s vice president of sales, describing the auction this way: “When this card went to the block we purposefully avoided speculation on a price because this was an important moment for the market to decide on the value of Luka’s best trading card. The card stood on its own merits and the market placed it where it belongs.” That is a company representative’s characterization of the sale, not an independent appraisal or proof of broader market value.
