The headline’s “this month” referred to January 2026, not October 2026. At the time, customer reports and local coverage pointed to more U.S. GameStop closures, but the cited reports said GameStop had not confirmed the specific locations or published an official list.
What the January 2026 reports said
TechRadar relayed figures from an unofficial tracker that listed 25 locations as confirmed and nine as reported. Those were the tracker’s categories, not totals confirmed by GameStop. The distinction matters: local notices, customer reports and tracker entries may help identify possible closures, but they do not establish that every listed store closed or that GameStop endorsed the list. TechRadar’s January 8, 2026 report also said GameStop had not confirmed the specific shutdowns.

Fast Company similarly reported that GameStop had not published an official list of locations slated to close. Fast Company’s coverage therefore adds no company-verified store-by-store roster. A specific location should be treated as reported, rather than confirmed by GameStop, unless the company or store directly verifies it.

What GameStop confirmed about its broader closures
GameStop’s fiscal 2024 filing described a portfolio review based on factors including market conditions and individual store performance. As quoted by TechRadar, the filing said the review resulted in 590 U.S. store closures in fiscal 2024 and anticipated a significant number of additional closures in fiscal 2025. That company-reported figure establishes the scale of its earlier closure program; it does not verify the January tracker’s individual locations.

Later fiscal-year reporting put the U.S. total at 727 stores closed in fiscal 2025, leaving GameStop with 1,598 U.S. stores as of January 31, 2026. Retail Dive also reported that GameStop did not expect a significant number of U.S. closures in fiscal 2026. These company-wide figures and outlook are reported by Retail Dive; they do not identify which locations on the January tracker ultimately shut.
What the September 2026 reopenings mean
On September 11, 2026, GameStop announced that select closed stores were reopening nationwide, but it did not disclose how many. Tom’s Hardware reported that a GameStop spokesperson told IGN the number was “at least one”; that is a second-hand account, not a direct interview reported by Tom’s Hardware. The announcement is evidence of selected reopenings, not a published reversal of the closure program or confirmation that every store reported closed in January has reopened. Why closures are happening
GameStop’s filing cited a combination of current market conditions and individual store performance as factors in its portfolio review, rather than naming one universal cause for every closure. Its fiscal 2025 business mix included collectibles at 29.2% of revenue, up 47.7% year over year, while software represented 20.1% of sales, according to Tom’s Hardware’s reporting. Those company-wide figures offer context for its business mix; they do not establish why a particular store closed.

How to check a specific store
- Look for a notice from the store or a direct update from GameStop; an unofficial tracker or local report is a lead, not an official company list.
- Check the location’s current status before traveling, since a reported closure, a completed closure and a later reopening are distinct events.
- For historical January reports, verify the date: later company-wide closure totals do not prove that a particular location on an earlier list shut down.
