Several eVTOL developers had billion-dollar market capitalizations in a comparable February 2026 snapshot, but those figures are not current rankings or proof that any aircraft is certified, in commercial service, or financially secure. The latest individual figure available here puts Joby Aviation at $5.89 billion at the October 2, 2026 close; it cannot be compared directly with the February figures. The main names to watch include Joby, Archer, BETA Technologies, Eve Air Mobility, Vertical Aerospace, and China’s EHang, whose pilotless aircraft follow a different operating and regulatory path.

What the billion-dollar eVTOL valuations show

Market capitalization is the market value of a company’s outstanding shares: StockAnalysis describes the calculation as share price multiplied by shares outstanding. It changes with the share price and is not a company’s cash balance, enterprise value, revenue, or intrinsic value. A large market cap signals how the public market is valuing the equity at a particular time; it does not establish certification, commercial operations, or the ability to fund a program to completion.

The most useful like-for-like comparison available is Eve Holding’s investor-day snapshot, using market prices as of February 6, 2026. Eve attributed the figures to S&P Global Market Intelligence. They are historical, same-date market capitalizations—not current values.

Company Market capitalization Comparison date and source
Joby Aviation $10.123 billion February 6, 2026; S&P Global Market Intelligence, as reproduced in Eve Holding’s investor presentation
Archer Aviation $4.754 billion February 6, 2026; S&P Global Market Intelligence, as reproduced in Eve Holding’s investor presentation
BETA Technologies $3.802 billion February 6, 2026; S&P Global Market Intelligence, as reproduced in Eve Holding’s investor presentation
Eve Air Mobility $1.156 billion February 6, 2026; S&P Global Market Intelligence, as reproduced in Eve Holding’s investor presentation
Vertical Aerospace $447 million February 6, 2026; S&P Global Market Intelligence, as reproduced in Eve Holding’s investor presentation

StockAnalysis put Joby’s market capitalization at $5.89 billion at the October 2, 2026 close, attributing its market-cap data to S&P Global Market Intelligence. That later, single-company datapoint is not a refreshed ranking: comparing it with the February figures would mix dates and could mislead about relative company values. No same-date October comparison for all five companies is established here.

Who the key eVTOL companies are

Joby Aviation

The U.S. company is developing a piloted, all-electric air taxi for passenger service. In its August 5, 2026 second-quarter shareholder letter, Joby reported $2.3 billion in cash and short-term investments as of June 30, 2026, five aircraft flying, and 12 more in production. Its certification graphic used data as of July 31, 2026 and showed company progress through five stages alongside a separate FAA progress series. That is a company progress presentation, not itself an FAA type certificate. Joby said it was targeting its first passengers in 2026; this was a target, not confirmation that passenger service had begun.

Archer Aviation

Archer is a U.S. publicly traded electric-aircraft developer. A September 2026 Le Monde report described the company as focusing on military development and reported an alliance with defense startup Anduril. That is a dated report about strategy, not a substitute for Archer’s current filings or proof of commercial aircraft operations.

BETA Technologies

BETA is a U.S. electric-aircraft developer. Its February 2026 market capitalization appears in the comparable snapshot above, but the evidence available here does not establish a same-date October valuation or enough current operating detail to place its certification or commercial readiness against the other companies.

Eve Air Mobility

Eve is developing an eVTOL and is associated with Brazil- and U.S.-based aerospace company Embraer. Eve’s SEC filing names focused developers including Archer, BETA, EHang, Joby, and Vertical as competitors. It also identifies established aerospace and automotive businesses—including Airbus, Bell Textron, Honda, and Hyundai—as competitors. The filing is useful for understanding the breadth of the competitive field, not for treating those companies as having equivalent eVTOL programs or current operating status.

Vertical Aerospace

The U.K. company is developing the piloted, four-passenger Valo. In its August 13, 2026 business update, Vertical reported piloted transition flights, approximately $134 million in cash and cash equivalents, and roughly $100 million in financing commitments. Commitments should not be counted as cash already received. The company also reported about 1,500 Valo pre-orders, including customers American Airlines, Avolon, Bristow, GOL, and Japan Airlines. Pre-orders are not completed sales or deliveries, and Vertical said some customer obligations are expected to be fulfilled through third-party agreements.

EHang

China-based EHang develops pilotless eVTOL aircraft, notably the EH216 series. Its August 25, 2026 second-quarter release reported 36 eVTOL aircraft delivered during the quarter, revenue of RMB77.9 million, and balances of RMB929.4 million in cash, short-term investments, and treasury investments as of June 30, 2026. EHang described work to move from certification toward operational readiness, point-to-point route trials, and a more cautious regulatory environment in China. Its approvals and operating developments should not be treated as equivalent to FAA or EASA certification for piloted U.S. or European air taxis.

Which company is closest to certification?

The available information does not support a definitive cross-company answer. Joby publishes company and FAA progress series, but the specific stage detail available here is not sufficient for a like-for-like ranking. Vertical reported piloted transition flights, which demonstrate flight-test progress but do not by themselves establish type certification. EHang’s regulatory process is in China and concerns pilotless aircraft, so its progress is not directly comparable to the piloted programs.

For a meaningful comparison, identify the aircraft and intended operation, the regulator whose approval is sought, and the specific authority-issued milestone achieved. A company’s internal progress chart, a successful flight, or a stated target is not the same as an issued type certificate or permission to carry paying passengers.

How to assess an eVTOL company beyond its valuation

Eve’s SEC filing highlights factors it believes will influence success, including aircraft performance, timely certification, production at scale, operating partnerships, valuable routes, next-generation technology, and quality, reliability, and safety. Those considerations translate into a practical investor checklist:

  • Certification: Which aircraft and regulator are involved, and what approval has the authority actually issued? Separate company-reported progress from regulatory decisions.
  • Aircraft and intended use: Is the program for piloted passenger air taxis, pilotless short-range aircraft, cargo, defense, or a broader electric-aircraft portfolio?
  • Demonstrated progress: Distinguish flight or transition tests, deliveries, and operating permissions from announced goals, route trials, and pre-orders.
  • Financing: Check the date and definition for reported cash and liquid investments. Treat financing commitments separately, and examine cash burn and runway where reliable figures are available; the balances cited above alone do not establish either company’s runway.
  • Production and operations: Look for evidence of manufacturing capability, operating and service partners, routes, and landing infrastructure—not just plans to build or operate them.
  • Valuation: Compare market capitalizations from the same market close and understand that the measure reflects share price and shares outstanding, not aircraft readiness or financial resilience.

Why the leading-player list can change

eVTOL is not limited to start-ups pursuing passenger air taxis. Eve’s competitor list spans specialized aircraft developers and established aerospace and automotive businesses. September 2026 reporting also described industry consolidation, some legacy-company programs narrowing, and continuing interest in defense and practical transport uses. That mix means a company’s position can change as programs, partnerships, funding, and regulatory pathways evolve; a market-cap table is only one dated view of the sector.

There is no independent market-size statistic established here that would justify quoting a total addressable eVTOL market figure as fact. Company forecasts, if encountered elsewhere, should be identified as forecasts and assessed for their assumptions rather than treated as measured market demand.

What to take from the valuations

The February 6, 2026 snapshot supports calling Joby, Archer, BETA, and Eve billion-dollar public-market companies at that point in time; Vertical’s listed figure was below $1 billion. Joby’s separately reported October 2 figure demonstrates why those numbers should not be presented as current rankings. For investors tracking the sector, the useful question is not simply which company is worth billions, but whether its aircraft, certification path, financing, manufacturing plan, and route-to-service evidence justify the expectations embedded in its valuation. These dated facts are context, not a recommendation to buy or sell any stock.
