The Boeing 737-8, better known as the 737 MAX 8, leads the available variant-level order data. An aircraft-market analysis dated January 2026 lists 4,347 firm MAX 8 orders and separately lists 438 MAX 8-200 orders. Those are secondary-source figures, not a current Boeing-published variant tally. Boeing’s public figures cover the MAX family as a whole, so the MAX 8’s exact lead should be read with that distinction in mind.
Which 737 MAX variant has the most orders?
The MAX 8 is the clear leader in the detailed variant-level comparison available here. The aircraft-market analysis hosted in an SEC filing reports 4,347 firm orders for the MAX 8 and lists the MAX 8-200 separately, with 438 orders. Its prose also reports 4,785 net MAX 8 orders; because it presents different figures and accounting categories, those numbers should not be combined or treated as one official Boeing total. The analysis and its January 2026 data are secondary reporting, not Boeing’s variant-by-variant order book.
Boeing said the MAX family had more than 7,200 aircraft in its order book and 2,360 deliveries through the end of June 2026. Those family-wide numbers do not show how orders divide among the MAX 7, 8, 9, and 10. Boeing’s August 2026 announcement provides the family context, not a variant ranking.
How the variants compare
Boeing’s published specifications show the trade-off: the smaller MAX 7 has the longest stated range, while the larger MAX 10 offers the most seats. Typical two-class seating is not a fixed airline configuration; carriers choose their own cabin layouts.

Why the MAX 8 attracts the broadest demand
Capacity and range suit many networks
The MAX 8 sits between the family’s smaller, longer-range MAX 7 and its higher-capacity MAX 9 and MAX 10. Boeing positions it for core short- and medium-haul markets, with 160–180 seats in a typical two-class layout and a published range of up to 3,500 nautical miles. That combination can fit a wide mix of domestic and regional routes without requiring an airline to choose the family’s smallest or largest model.

Airlines and lessors cite flexibility, growth, and fleet renewal
Those explanations are company-stated reasons, not independent evidence of realized airline costs or profitability. Turkish Airlines said the MAX would bring greater efficiency and flexibility to its Istanbul hub network, with MAX 8s serving high-demand domestic and international routes. Its September 2026 agreement covered 100 MAX 8s and options for 50 additional MAX jets, with a right to substitute MAX 10s. Boeing’s announcement describes the agreement.
Air India said its January 2026 order of 20 MAX 8s and 10 MAX 10s would support high-frequency domestic and regional service while maintaining operational commonality; it described the MAX 10 as the higher-capacity aircraft. Boeing’s announcement gives the order details.

For lessors, the MAX 8 can be part of a portfolio intended to meet airline growth and replacement demand. BOC Aviation ordered 50 MAX 8s in March 2025, citing airline growth and the replacement of older, less-efficient aircraft. Boeing’s release records that order; it is an example, not a lifetime total.

The MAX 10’s appeal is capacity: Boeing describes it as the family’s largest variant, aimed at high-demand routes. Recent announcements illustrate that demand but do not change the historical order-lead finding for the MAX 8.

- Alaska Airlines announced an order for 105 MAX 10s plus options for 35 in January 2026. It cited high-density routes, fleet renewal, and network expansion. Options are not firm orders. Boeing’s announcement also describes the order.
- SMBC Aviation Capital announced an order for 60 MAX 10s and 40 MAX 8s in July 2026. The lessor said the MAX 10 order reflected upgauging and demand for larger single-aisle aircraft; Boeing highlighted per-seat economics. Boeing’s release covers the transaction.
Boeing reported that lessors had ordered more than 1,450 MAX aircraft by July 2026, representing 20% of the family backlog. That is Boeing’s family-level figure and characterization of lessor demand, not a count for any single variant. The announcement includes the figure.
Quick Recap
What the order figures do—and do not—prove
- Firm orders, options, and substitution rights differ. An option gives a buyer the right, but not the obligation, to place a later order under agreed terms. A substitution clause can let a buyer switch models; it does not establish a firm order for the substitute variant.
- Recent announcements are not cumulative totals. The Turkish, Alaska, Air India, BOC Aviation, and SMBC Aviation Capital orders show examples of demand and fleet strategy, not lifetime rankings.
- The MAX 8 and MAX 8-200 figures are reported separately. The secondary analysis’s different counts and labels should not be added into a Boeing-certified total.
- The other variants’ precise cumulative ranking is not established here. Boeing’s public figures cited above are family totals and selected transactions, rather than a complete variant-by-variant firm-order table.
