CAR Group (ASX:CAR) is a business worth assessing, but the available evidence does not establish that it is currently a bargain—or support a verified ASX-wide list of quality shares at reasonable prices. CAR reported solid FY25 growth and cash conversion; a 9 October 2026 valuation snapshot showed several market multiples, while later FY26 results are available here only through secondary reporting. The useful approach is to assess business quality separately from price, verify the latest issuer results, and test what the market price assumes.
What does “quality at a reasonable price” mean?
Quality is about the durability and reliability of a company’s economics. A familiar brand or fast-growing share price is not enough. A reasonable price is one that can be justified by plausible future earnings and cash flows, after allowing for risk. Neither quality nor a low-looking valuation multiple guarantees an attractive investment return.

Assess a company across six connected areas:
- Durability and competitive position: Look for evidence that customers have a reason to stay, competitors face meaningful barriers, and the company can sustain its position. Network effects can help, but their strength and persistence need to be demonstrated.
- Earnings and cash-flow quality: Compare reported profit with operating cash flow over several periods. Check for large adjustments, one-off gains, working-capital swings, or a widening gap between earnings and cash generation.
- Balance-sheet resilience: Consider debt, interest obligations, cash and refinancing needs alongside earnings. A business with strong operating metrics can still be vulnerable if its financing is fragile.
- Governance and execution: Review capital allocation, acquisitions, disclosure, management incentives and delivery against stated plans. New products or expansion strategies add potential, but also execution risk.
- Valuation against normalized results: Compare the share price with earnings and free cash flow that could reasonably persist, not just one unusually strong or weak year.
- Sensitivity to assumptions: Test how an estimate of value changes if growth, margins, adoption or the discount rate is less favourable than expected.
These checks are most useful together. Strong cash conversion does not cancel out a demanding price; a modest multiple does not make a business high quality.

Use more than one valuation lens and make the assumptions visible. Price-to-earnings (P/E) relates the share price to earnings; enterprise value to EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) includes the value of debt and cash in the enterprise-value measure; price-to-free-cash-flow (P/FCF) compares price with cash remaining after operating and investment needs. Each has limitations, and providers may calculate ratios differently.

- Start with normalized earnings and cash flow. Separate recurring operations from unusual items and consider how results might look across a normal business cycle.
- Write down the forecast drivers. State what you assume about revenue growth, margins, reinvestment, cash conversion and the balance sheet. Do not treat an analyst forecast as a fact.
- Compare multiple measures. If P/E appears low but P/FCF is high, investigate why earnings are not translating into cash. If EV/EBITDA looks attractive, account for debt, cash and the investment needed to sustain the business.
- Stress-test the case. Recalculate using slower growth, lower margins, weaker product adoption or a higher discount rate. Consider whether the investment case still works, rather than relying on one central estimate.
- Use like-for-like comparisons. Compare companies on the same valuation date and a consistent earnings basis. A ratio from one date or data provider is not directly comparable with another from a different date or methodology.
A market multiple is a snapshot of price relative to a particular earnings or cash-flow measure. It does not reveal by itself whether the underlying forecast is realistic or whether the business can defend its economics.
What did CAR Group report, and what do the results say about quality?
For the year ended 30 June 2025, CAR Group’s 11 August 2025 issuer release reported both pro forma and statutory-style figures. The pro forma figures exclude the Australian Tyres business from both periods, so they should not be confused with the company’s reported totals.

The growth, margin and cash-conversion figures are evidence to examine when assessing earnings quality. They do not, on their own, establish how durable those economics will be or what the shares are worth. CAR said its carsales business maintained Australian market leadership and grew across key segments; that is the company’s own account of its market position.

A 2026 Morningstar article reported that CAR’s FY26 pro forma EBITDA rose 12% in constant currency to A$700 million, alongside 12% revenue growth and flat margins. It also described guidance for slightly accelerating revenue growth in FY27 and EBITDA growth at an unchanged pace compared with FY26. These are secondary-source reports, not figures verified here against CAR Group’s FY26 primary release. The ASX results archive lists FY26 full-year and half-year materials; use those issuer or exchange documents to confirm the figures and guidance before relying on them.

What could support or weaken the business case?
Morningstar’s analysis describes the Australian marketplace as benefiting from network effects and cost advantages. It also identifies products such as Instant Offer and Carsales Select as possible ways for CAR to participate in more of the car-retailing value chain. Those are analyst assessments of potential, not assured outcomes. The same analysis notes that further growth and potential take-rate expansion depend on customer adoption and execution. In a valuation model, that means testing a case where adoption is slower or the expected expansion does not materialize.

This is a dated third-party snapshot, not a current quote or a fair-value conclusion. Ratios can change with share price, financial results and forecast revisions, and vendors may use different definitions. A lower multiple than in an earlier period would not by itself prove undervaluation: the earnings outlook, cash-flow forecasts, debt, competitive durability and downside case still need scrutiny.
Are there other ASX shares to investigate?
Morningstar’s 2026 market commentary named Endeavour Group, Spark New Zealand and Sonic Healthcare among selected Australian shares it viewed as undervalued and moat-rated in its outlook. Those names are research leads, not a verified current shortlist or a recommendation. The available evidence does not provide a comparable company-by-company review of their latest results, balance sheets and dated valuation assumptions, so it would be misleading to rank them alongside CAR as confirmed opportunities.

To compare any candidate with CAR, use the same date and method: examine recent issuer results, cash conversion, debt and guidance, then compare normalized earnings and free cash flow under consistent assumptions. Confirm that the valuation still reflects the latest share price and company information before drawing a conclusion.
