The available evidence does not identify the aircraft variant behind the claim that United Airlines is the world’s largest operator among only three airlines that fly it. Without a named variant and a dated, comparable count of operators and aircraft, the headline’s central claim cannot be verified.
Why the claim cannot yet be confirmed
The variant has to be identified before anyone can check how many airlines operate it or whether United has the largest fleet. The available sources do not establish that identity, nor do they provide a current global operator census with comparable fleet counts.
“Largest” also needs a consistent measure. A meaningful comparison would use counts from the same date and distinguish aircraft active in service from stored aircraft and orders. It would also clarify whether subsidiaries or regional operators are included. No such three-carrier comparison is established here.
Is the aircraft the Boeing 737 MAX 9?
The MAX 9 is a possible lead, but the evidence does not support treating it as the variant named in the claim. United’s July 2024 investor filing described the airline as the largest operator of the type, with 75 active aircraft at that time. That is a dated figure, not a current ranking or proof that just three airlines operate the aircraft. United’s July 2024 investor filing

An Associated Press report about the January 2024 grounding said United and Alaska were the only U.S. passenger airlines operating the MAX 9 then, but also named six international operators. That does not fit a worldwide count of only three carriers. Associated Press report on MAX 9 operators
What United’s fleet disclosures do—and do not—show
United’s 2025 Form 10-K reports a fleet snapshot dated December 31, 2025, including 48 Boeing 787-9 aircraft. That figure is specific to the 787-9 and does not identify the variant in the claim or establish a three-carrier comparison. United Airlines Holdings, Inc. 2025 Form 10-K

United announced in March 2026 that it expects 50 Airbus A321XLR aircraft to join its fleet, with more than half expected to be in service by 2028. The airline says the aircraft will replace some Boeing 757s on existing international routes. This is a forward-looking fleet plan, not evidence that the A321XLR is the unnamed variant or that only three carriers operate it. United’s March 2026 A321XLR announcement

A reliable check would first name the exact aircraft variant, then compare each confirmed operator using a common date and counting method. The comparison should separate aircraft in service from stored aircraft and orders, and state whether affiliated airlines are counted separately. Until those details are available, neither the “only 3 carriers” count nor United’s claimed position as the largest operator is established.
