There isn’t enough evidence to name one chain as the cheapest place to buy eggs nationwide. In a New York price check published February 26, 2025, Costco had the lowest reported unit price among the listed cartons: $4.25 per dozen for a 24-count pack. But that is a dated local snapshot, not a current national ranking. A separate San Francisco comparison in February 2026 found Trader Joe’s at $2.99 per dozen and Whole Foods at $4.49; it did not include Costco or ALDI.
What the five-store price check found
Abby Rose Notarnicola’s February 2025 New York comparison reported these prices at four of the five named chains. The Whole Foods price was not stated in the article’s displayed results, so it cannot be included in that ranking.

In that snapshot, Costco’s 24-count carton had the lowest reported price per dozen. It also required the largest purchase and a higher upfront payment than a single-dozen carton. The figures are historical New York prices reported by Abby Rose Notarnicola in AOL on February 26, 2025; they should not be treated as current shelf prices elsewhere.
Why a different city gives a different answer
A San Francisco Chronicle comparison based on a February 2026 visit found one-dozen eggs at Trader Joe’s for $2.99 and Whole Foods for $4.49. In the same local comparison, Lucky was $2.79; Bi-Rite, Gus’s, Mollie Stone’s, and Safeway were $4.99; and Luke’s Local was $5.49. These prices describe selected San Francisco stores, not the five-chain New York comparison. The Chronicle’s selected-store average was $5.72 in 2025 and $4.47 in 2026, a reported 21.9% decline.

Because the 2026 comparison did not include Costco or ALDI, it does not establish which of the five chains is cheapest overall. It does show why an older result can be a poor guide to what a shopper will find in another city or at another time.
How to compare cartons fairly
Compare the same kind of egg and calculate a unit price before choosing a store. A carton’s sticker price can look low simply because it contains fewer eggs, while a larger carton can offer a lower unit cost but require more spending at checkout.

- Match the egg attributes. Check size and production description, such as large versus another size or cage-free versus conventional. The 2025 comparison, for example, specified cage-free eggs at ALDI and Trader Joe’s but did not describe the Kroger eggs as cage-free.
- Convert to a common unit. Divide the price by the number of eggs, then multiply by 12 for a per-dozen equivalent. For example, Trader Joe’s $3.49 half-dozen carton in the New York check worked out to $6.98 per dozen equivalent.
- Account for carton size and upfront cost. Compare unit price, but also decide whether you will use a 24-count pack before it goes to waste and whether the larger checkout total fits your budget.
- Check the price where and when you shop. Store prices and availability can vary by location and date. Use a current local listing or shelf tag rather than assuming a past comparison still applies.
What national price data can—and cannot—tell you
The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service’s Egg Markets Overview dated April 24, 2026 reported national average grocery-store advertised prices of $1.43 per dozen for conventional caged large white eggs and $2.60 per dozen for UEP cage-free large brown eggs. These are averages of advertised prices, not guaranteed everyday shelf prices at any named chain, and the two figures describe different egg types. They provide broad context, not a retailer-by-retailer winner.

For a useful decision, compare local listings or shelf prices for the same size and production type, record the carton count, and calculate the cost per dozen. Kroger’s traditional-egg catalog offers an online way to check listings, but products and prices depend on the shopping location. Apply the same local check to the other chains; do not assume that an online listing or a past store visit represents every branch.

If the lowest unit price requires a special trip, weigh that against the extra travel and the larger purchase. No route-cost calculation is established for these five chains, so savings from visiting multiple stores depend on your own distance, transport costs, and shopping plans.
