Where’s George? is a community project for recording U.S. dollar bills and seeing whether another participant later reports the same bill. It does not continuously locate cash: its trail is made up of sightings people submit, so an unreported bill has no new recorded location.
How Where’s George? bill tracking works
The project’s premise is to identify a bill by its serial number and add participant-reported locations to a shared record. A current description of the comparable Indian-currency project Where’s Rupee characterizes Where’s George? as tracking U.S. dollar bills since 1998 using unique serial numbers and user-entered location records. Where’s Rupee’s About page describes the concept; it is not Where’s George?’s own documentation.
In practical terms, a recorded trail grows only when participants submit sightings. The record can show that someone reported a bill at a particular place, but it cannot establish where the bill went between reports or whether it was continuously in any location. No new entry means no new recorded sighting—not that the bill stopped moving.
What you need to participate
The described activity uses bills already in circulation and an online community record. The available sources do not establish that a particular physical product must be purchased. They also do not verify Where’s George?’s current entry fields, whether an account is required, or the exact instructions for marking or submitting a bill.

Where’s George?’s home page and FAQ returned 403 Forbidden when accessed, so its current rules, privacy terms, and availability could not be confirmed. Check the project’s own pages directly for current instructions before entering information or marking currency; do not assume that another project’s process or policies apply.
How many bills have been entered?
Wikipedia reported more than 331 million bills entered and more than $1.781 billion in total face value as of February 10, 2026. Those are date-bound figures from a secondary source, not live totals and not figures independently verified against Where’s George?’s official site. Wikipedia’s Where’s George? entry is the source for that dated account.

Do not confuse Where’s George? statistics with those of Where’s Rupee, a separate project for Indian currency. Where’s Rupee reported 32 notes entered and 32 sightings across 11 of India’s 36 states and union territories as of October 6, 2026; those figures describe Where’s Rupee, not U.S. dollar tracking. Its About page gives that project’s figures.
