Where Was the $83 Billion Wangu Gold Deposit Found—and How Much Gold Is Estimated?

China’s Hunan Geological Bureau reported 300 tonnes of gold in veins at Wangu and estimated more than 1,000 tonnes at depths reaching 3,000 meters. The estimate and its approximate $83 billion value are not established as independently audited.

The reported Wangu gold field is in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province, in central China. In a November 2024 announcement, the Geological Bureau of Hunan Province reported 300 tonnes of gold in veins within 2,000 meters and estimated more than 1,000 tonnes across the deposit to depths of 3,000 meters. The bureau described the deeper estimate as worth 600 billion yuan, approximately US$83 billion at the time—not as a current market valuation or a verified amount China can earn from mining.

Where was the reported $83 billion gold deposit found?

The Wangu gold field is beneath Pingjiang County in Hunan Province, central China. The figures that drew international attention came from an announcement by the Geological Bureau of Hunan Province, reported by Xinhua on November 21, 2024.

How much gold did officials report?

The announcement separates gold detected in veins at shallower depths from a larger estimate for the field as exploration extends deeper:

  • Within 2,000 meters: 300 tonnes of gold were reported in veins.
  • To depths of 3,000 meters: the bureau estimated that the field could contain more than 1,000 tonnes in total.

The more-than-1,000-tonne figure is an estimate, not the same category as the 300 tonnes reported in veins within the first 2,000 meters. The announcement does not establish that the full deeper estimate has been independently audited as a mineral resource or reserve.

Is 138 grams per tonne the deposit’s average grade?

No. Chen Rulin, an ore-prospecting expert with the Geological Bureau of Hunan Province, told Xinhua that samples in the 2,000-meter range reached a maximum of 138 grams of gold per tonne of ore. That is a reported high value, not a deposit-wide average grade; the announcement does not state an average grade for the whole estimated field.

Chen also said, “Many drilled rock cores showed visible gold.” The announcement cited visible gold in drilled cores, 3D geological modeling and gold found in peripheral drilling. These observations describe exploration evidence, but visible gold in selected cores does not establish a uniform grade across the full estimate.

What does the $83 billion valuation mean?

The Geological Bureau’s stated value for the deeper estimate was 600 billion yuan, which Xinhua rendered as about US$83 billion. The dispatch does not give a gold-price date or account for extraction costs, recovery rates, development, financing or other mining economics. Treat the dollar amount as an approximate conversion attached to the 2024 announcement—not a current valuation of recoverable gold or expected mining revenue.

Has the larger estimate been independently verified?

The sources available do not establish an independent audit of the more-than-1,000-tonne estimate or the latest exploration status. A December 2, 2024 KGHM market overview repeats the bureau’s figures and reports that 48 of 55 drill holes above 1,500 meters had revealed gold, a reported discovery rate of 87.3 percent. That is secondary reporting of the bureau’s information, not a separate resource audit.

Later Daily Galaxy coverage in March 2026 characterizes the figures as reported estimates and says more drilling is needed. An August 2026 article says third-party verification is needed. Neither establishes that an independent verification has since been completed. Accordingly, the careful description is a major announced discovery with a very large estimated gold endowment—not a completed mine or independently confirmed reserve of more than 1,000 tonnes.
