A more reliable approach is to pick the store by the job the purchase needs to do: a cheap trend piece, a basic you will wear for years, an independent label, or a secondhand find. The store examples below come from US and UK guides and reader discussions. Prices, sizing, delivery charges, return terms and student discounts vary by country and change often, so treat each name as a place to start checking, not a verdict.
Four things to compare before you buy
- Budget after delivery and returns. A low item price can cost more once shipping and return postage are added. Check these at checkout for your country, because terms differ.
- Likely repeat wear. Look at fabric content, seams, lining and the care label. Nothing in the sources reviewed proves that any brand’s garments last longer than another’s, so judge the piece in your hands.
- Style and size range. Trend-led, minimalist, work or event clothing, and vintage each suit different stores. Confirm your size is actually stocked, not just listed.
- Convenience. Compare a nearby store with online ordering, and note shipping speed and whether returns can be made in store.
Lower-cost trend pieces
For clothes that follow current styles without a long-term commitment, a fashion guide from Who What Wear names H&M as a source of affordable staple pieces with a slightly trendy edge. That is the guide’s editorial recommendation, not the result of independent product testing. In the UK, Save the Student’s guide places ASOS in its low-priced category; that price tier is specific to the UK and may have changed. Two US chains, Old Navy and Walmart, come up in a Reddit discussion of where readers buy affordable clothing. Those mentions are anecdotal and do not rank the stores.

Repeat-wear basics
Plain tees, knitwear, denim and layering pieces are where a slightly higher price can pay off, but only if the fit and fabric hold up. UNIQLO is listed as a medium-priced basics destination in Save the Student’s UK guide, and readers mention it in the same Reddit discussion. Gap Factory also appears there as a reader suggestion. Who What Wear lists Everlane for minimalists and well-made basics. That is the publisher’s own characterization of the brand, not evidence from independent product testing, so check the fabric and reviews before relying on it.
Independent designers
If you want pieces that are less likely to appear on everyone else’s feed, the same Who What Wear guide recommends Lisa Says Gah as a way to discover independent designers. Independent labels are usually made in smaller runs, so sizes can sell out, and returns policies can be stricter than at large chains. Read the returns page before ordering.

- Redemption: Instore and Online
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Secondhand, resale and local shops
Thrift shops and smaller local shops are the most price-flexible option, and they are the destinations readers mention most often in the Reddit discussion, though that evidence is anecdotal. Secondhand buying also carries a values argument. Ethical Consumer’s UK guide rates online shopping sites and addresses secondhand buying, packaging and workers’ rights. Its score table is updated daily, so check the current version before quoting any rating. Use its ratings as one input and look for specific evidence, such as published supplier policies or packaging details, rather than general claims that a store is “ethical.”

A practical shopping sequence
- Decide which job the purchase has to do: trend, basic, independent label or secondhand. This narrows the list to two or three stores.
- Open each store’s delivery and returns pages for your country before you add anything to a basket.
- Check that your size is in stock and read at least a few reviews that mention fit.
- For a repeat-wear basic, inspect fabric content and care instructions before buying, or ask whether returns are accepted if the item is not as expected.
- If values matter to you, look up the store in the current Ethical Consumer guide and note the specific evidence behind any rating.
Essentials beyond clothing
Teen Vogue’s June 2024 Twentysomethings Shopping List covers adjacent categories: mattresses, dorm and kitchen items, skincare, and capsule wardrobe products. It is a different question from where to buy clothes, so treat it as a separate list. The publisher says the guide drew on consultations with psychologists, dermatologists, celebrity stylists, social-media videos, customer reviews and editors. That describes its method; it does not quote any individual. The list dates from 2024, so confirm prices and availability before buying.

What the evidence does and does not show
- The Reddit discussion is one poster’s question and the replies to it. It shows the store names readers bring up, not how often people shop at each one.
- KPMG’s Consumer Pulse Summer 2025 survey sampled 831 US consumers with children and asked about back-to-school clothing bought for their children. Its figures do not describe people in their 20s buying for themselves, so they should not be used as a target-audience statistic.
- No source reviewed establishes a universal ranking of stores for people in their 20s. The recommendations above are editorial choices, not tested results.
