The most practical way to protect travel cash is to carry only what you expect to spend that day and keep a small reserve separate from your everyday wallet. A money belt or inside pocket can hold that reserve; a closed crossbody bag worn in front is more convenient for daily cash. Neither concealment nor a hotel safe guarantees protection.
Start with less cash and separate it
Take only the cash you need for the day. A large amount is harder to replace if it is lost or stolen, and keeping all your cash together means one incident could leave you without a backup. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) advises against taking large sums, while the Government of Canada recommends carrying only the cash needed for the day.
Keep a modest backup amount apart from the wallet you use for purchases. Avoid storing all cash and payment cards in one place. The goal is not to create a secret spot no one can find; it is to prevent one lost or stolen item from taking everything at once.
Practical places to keep travel cash
There is no well-supported ranking of ten clever hiding places versus ten cliché ones. Official travel-safety guidance supports a few useful approaches, but does not establish that familiar hiding spots are inherently unsafe or that any particular location is theft-proof. Choose where to keep money based on how accessible it needs to be and whether you can keep it secure.

Money belt or inside pocket: a concealed reserve
A money belt or pocket worn inside clothing can keep backup cash apart from your everyday wallet. Seattle Police Department and Police.uk both mention money belts as an option; Seattle Police also advises keeping money inside clothing if carrying a large amount. That is not a reason to carry more than you need: government guidance recommends limiting daily cash and separating a reserve.
Use a concealed pocket for money you do not expect to spend often, rather than repeatedly reaching for it in public. A hidden location can reduce casual visibility, but it cannot guarantee that cash will stay safe.

Zipped crossbody bag worn in front: accessible day cash
For money you need throughout the day, a closed crossbody bag worn in front keeps it reachable while making the bag easier to see and keep in your control. The Government of Canada advises carrying a purse close to the body, and Police.uk recommends keeping bags closed and in view. Keep the zip closed, avoid setting the bag down unattended, and do not treat wearing it in front as foolproof protection.
Hotel safe: cash you will not need that day
A hotel safe can add a layer of security for cash you do not need while out. The FDIC cautions that some safes have master keys or override codes, so a safe is not completely secure. Store only what makes sense for your trip, and check the safe before checkout so you do not leave anything behind.

Keep your money safer while you are out
- Keep bags closed and in view, especially in crowds and on public transport.
- Stay alert when distractions make you less attentive, such as checking a map or taking photos.
- Carry your bag in front where practical, and do not leave cash or belongings unattended.
- Keep your daily spending money separate from your reserve so losing one item does not mean losing everything.

The figure is historical, and the release does not establish a current prevalence estimate or survey methodology. It is not evidence that travellers today should carry all their cash together; current practical guidance instead supports carrying only what you need and keeping a separate backup.
