Which offers were genuinely free without a purchase?
Whataburger was the clearest no-purchase example in Axios’s reporting: it specified a free hot or iced coffee during a defined six a.m. to six p.m. window on September 29. Other offers had conditions that affected the real cost or effort: Dunkin’ required both a purchase and Rewards membership; Circle K required its app; and several other chains tied free coffee to a companion purchase or rewards account.

Why the date matters
National Coffee Day in the United States fell on Sunday, September 29, in 2024. Circle K’s reported promotion lasted a week, and Scooter’s offer ran on September 29 and 30; many of the others were limited to September 29. Every window listed here has passed. The historical coverage does not establish whether any business will repeat an offer in a later year, so check a chain’s current app or local store before making a trip.
