These sources serve different purposes; an aggregator’s presentation is not a substitute for checking a material figure in the underlying filing.
Three reliable places to find company financial data
| Website or source | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| SEC EDGAR | Original filings by U.S. public companies, including annual and quarterly reports | Official filing source. The SEC’s financial-statement datasets extract numeric data from company reports filed with the Commission; consult the complete filing for context, notes, or amendment status. |
| Company investor-relations website | The company’s own annual reports, quarterly reports, and investor materials | A direct route to issuer-published documents. For example, JPMorganChase provides annual reports and proxy materials, while Clarivate offers SEC filing search. Site layouts and available materials differ by company. |
| Yahoo Finance | A convenient summary of company statements | Yahoo’s help information describes annual and quarterly income statements, cash-flow statements, and balance sheets. Yahoo identifies Morningstar as a provider of financial statements and valuation ratios; its data is for informational purposes and not intended for trading or investing. |
How to use each source
Use SEC EDGAR to verify what a company filed
Search for the company on EDGAR and open the relevant annual or quarterly filing. The filing is the primary source for the reported figures and includes the surrounding explanations and notes that a condensed data view may not show. The SEC also publishes datasets derived from corporate reports filed with the Commission. Those datasets can make numeric statement data easier to extract, but they are not a replacement for the full report when context or amendments matter.
Use investor relations to find the issuer’s own reports
Look for an “Investors” or “Investor Relations” link on the company’s website, then find its annual reports, quarterly reports, or SEC filing resources. This can be a straightforward way to reach the company’s published materials. The examples documented here include annual reports and proxy materials at JPMorganChase and filing search at Clarivate; the exact organization depends on the issuer.
Use Yahoo Finance for a fast overview
Yahoo Finance can make it easier to scan a company’s income statement, cash flow, and balance sheet in annual or quarterly views. Yahoo says Morningstar provides its financial statements and valuation ratios. Treat this as a summary layer: if a figure matters to your analysis, check the same period in the company’s filing rather than assuming the summary and filing are interchangeable.
#1 Best Overall
Check period, statement, and filing context before comparing figures
- Match the reporting period. Compare the same fiscal year or quarter, not annual figures against quarterly ones.
- Match the statement basis. Make sure the figures refer to the same statement and reporting presentation before drawing comparisons.
- Check the original report for important numbers. Dataset extractions and aggregator summaries can be useful for locating figures, while filings provide the full context and notes.
- Look for amendments. SEC dataset documentation describes as-filed submissions, multiple reporting periods, and amendments. When amendment status could affect a figure, confirm it in the filing history and complete report.
- Keep geography in view. EDGAR is the U.S. filing system discussed here; these sources do not establish a complete global solution for company financial data.
Why this is a three-source shortlist, not a verified top six
The evidence supports three useful source types: the SEC’s official filing system, company investor-relations sites, and Yahoo Finance’s summarized statements. It does not establish three additional websites as current, comparable recommendations. A fair six-site ranking would require checking each candidate’s geographic and issuer coverage, annual and quarterly statement access, historical depth, amendment handling, and route to the underlying report. Without that verification, adding three names would imply a comparison that has not been established.
