In the U.S., start with an official local finder, then check the specific site’s hours and accepted items before you go. Goodwill and The Salvation Army offer donation location tools; Planet Aid lists clothing bins in the areas it serves. Local shelters and mutual-aid groups may also accept clothing, but contact them first to ask what they need.
Find a nearby place to donate clothes
Use a locator to identify a practical destination, then confirm its current rules directly. A national organization’s general guidance does not guarantee that every local site accepts the same items or is open when you arrive.
- Goodwill: Use Goodwill’s donation guidance and location tool. Goodwill lists clothing, shoes, handbags and jewelry, but says local Goodwill organizations decide which goods they accept.
- The Salvation Army: Its donation drop-off page lets you enter a ZIP code to find options for clothing and other goods.
- Planet Aid: Check the bin finder for a location in its service area. The locator is more useful for planning a drop-off than relying on an organization-wide bin count.
- Local shelters or mutual-aid groups: Contact a group directly if you want to meet a particular local need. Availability, requested sizes and seasonal needs vary, so don’t assume a group can accept a donation without checking.
Compare destinations before you choose
Pick the destination that fits your priorities, rather than assuming one organization is best for every donor. Consider:
- Distance and convenience: Find out whether the site is nearby, open, and accepting donations at the time you plan to go.
- Item rules: Check whether it accepts your specific clothing and its condition. Rules can differ by organization and local site.
- How the organization describes its use of donations: Goodwill says donated goods and proceeds support programs in the donor’s community. The Salvation Army says donated goods fund its Adult Rehabilitation Centers and recovery services. Planet Aid says it resells collected goods and funds community development.
- Your preferred route: You may prefer a local program or a textile-reuse organization. The organizations’ descriptions of their missions do not establish an independently audited comparison of outcomes.
Check what condition and items are accepted
Follow the selected organization’s current instructions. Goodwill’s national guidance lists clothing, shoes, handbags and jewelry but leaves final acceptance decisions to local organizations. Planet Aid says its bins accept clean clothes and shoes, as well as bedding, towels, curtains, sleeping bags, socks, underwear and bras. It excludes items that are dirty, wet, moldy or tattered beyond repair; minor tears, stains or other imperfections may be acceptable.

Prepare clothes for drop-off
- Sort and inspect: Separate items according to the destination’s rules. For Planet Aid bins, the organization asks for clean items and excludes wet, moldy, dirty or irreparable goods.
- Pack for the route: Planet Aid asks donors to put clothing in plastic bags for its bins. That is not a universal requirement for other donation sites. Reuse a bag or box you already have; there is no need to buy special packaging.
- Confirm before traveling: Check the location’s hours, item acceptance and current status. Donation rules, hours and bin availability can change.
Can you mail clothes instead?
Planet Aid describes a Give Back Box option for mailing up to 70 pounds to its thrift store. Before sending anything, verify that the option is currently available, check shipping arrangements and confirm which items are eligible on Planet Aid’s mail-in page. The stated weight limit is for that option, not a general limit for clothing donations.

- ULTRA-STRONG 200LB LOAD CAPACITY — Independently tested to support heavy-duty moves. Our signature wrap-around handles encircle the entire bag from bottom to top, creating a structural "cradle" that supports weight from the base. Combined with reinforced stitching, these bags won't snap or tear, even when packed with heavy linens, books, or kitchenware.
- THE SMARTER BOX ALTERNATIVE — Why buy expensive, bulky moving boxes that end up in the trash? One 24-gallon HOMESURE bag provides the same volume as a large box but is far easier to carry over the shoulder. When empty, all 8 bags fold down into a compact stack, saving you a massive amount of storage space in your closet or car trunk.
- COLLEGE DORM MOVE-IN READY — Save time and car space on move-in day. One 24-gallon HOMESURE bag is a dorm room lifesaver. To visualize the space: it fits 2 Twin XL comforters and 1 mattress pad, OR 6 standard pillows, OR 30+ sneakers and an entire semester’s worth of sweaters. It’s the ultimate heavy-duty solution for carrying everything from the trunk to the dorm room.
- INSTANT CONTENT IDENTIFICATION — Stop the "guessing game" on moving day. Each tote features a clear plastic tag pocket. Simply slide in a label to identify "Master Bedroom" or "Garage Toys" in seconds. This small design detail saves hours of unzipping and searching, making your organization system professional and efficient.
- PRO-GRADE PROTECTION — Crafted from high-density, water-resistant woven fabric with smooth #5 dual zippers. These aren't flimsy one-move bags; they are designed for years of reuse. Whether it's light rain during transit or long-term storage in a dusty attic, your clothes and linens stay pristine and protected.
What Planet Aid’s bin counts mean
Planet Aid’s service-area page reports nearly 10,000 bins across 14 states and says it collects “70+ million pounds” of used clothes and shoes each year; the page does not specify a year for the annual collection figure. Its 2024 Annual Report, published in 2025, instead reports nearly 9,000 donation bins at more than 6,200 sites. Those figures come from different publication contexts and count bins and sites differently; neither tells you where a currently usable bin is. Use the live service-area information and bin finder for your location.
