You can buy products marketed as “lost packages” online, but the label does not tell you exactly what is inside—or prove that a box is an authentic, unopened parcel from USPS or another carrier. Some offers are fixed-price mystery boxes made from mixed liquidation inventory; others are bulk auction lots. Here are four options and what to check before spending money.
What “lost packages” can mean
Retailers use “lost,” “unclaimed,” and “undeliverable” loosely. A box may contain mail or e-commerce parcels, but sellers may also mix in customer returns, overstock, shelf pulls, or other liquidation goods. Read the specific listing and the seller’s terms rather than treating the label as proof of the contents or their origin.
USPS does operate an official Mail Recovery Center (MRC), its “lost and found” department for undeliverable, non-returnable mail. USPS says it may occasionally auction unclaimed merchandise in lots. That does not establish that an independent seller’s inventory came from USPS, or that every “lost package” offer is a postal parcel. The sellers below should be treated as independent businesses unless an authoritative source establishes an affiliation.
Four places to consider
These are examples of different kinds of offers, not endorsements. Listings, prices, stock, shipping, and terms can change; verify the live product or lot page before ordering.

| Seller or marketplace | Offer type | What the listing says | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pallet Hugger | Fixed-price retail mystery boxes | The retailer lists Small, Medium, and Large “Authentic Mail Mystery Box” products and describes them as featuring unclaimed and undeliverable mail packages. The opened page showed prices of $145, $195, and $285, respectively; these are volatile listing prices. | The authenticity and sourcing descriptions are the seller’s claims; the page does not independently verify each parcel’s provenance or contents. Confirm current price, shipping, and terms. |
| Buy Unclaimed Mail | Retail mixed-goods mystery boxes | Its FAQ says inventory may include undeliverable e-commerce packages, returns, overstock, shelf pulls, and other liquidation inventory. The company describes itself as an independent reseller, not affiliated with USPS, FedEx, UPS, Amazon, other carriers, or retailers. | The FAQ says no specific products, brands, condition, functionality, or value are guaranteed; some packaging may have been opened or resealed during earlier handling. Treat the purchase as chance-based, not as a guaranteed discount or premium-goods deal. Read the current product terms. |
| Liquidation.com | Bulk auction lots | Search results showed auction lots described as “Packages Merchandise Returns, Lost Mail, Undelivered Post,” with quantities, sellers, locations, bids, and auction timing. The page included lots of 40 items with changing bids. | This is a wholesale auction route, not a small fixed-price consumer box. Read the exact live lot description, seller record, bid rules, and shipping terms; include shipping and your final bid in the total cost. |
| Unclaimed Mail Center | Mixed mystery, returns, overstock, and liquidation boxes | The shop lists products described as mixed unclaimed, returned, or mystery packages, alongside overstock and liquidation boxes. | The product labels themselves indicate that not every item is necessarily a sealed postal parcel. Check the current source description, price, availability, and terms for the specific box. |
How USPS handles unclaimed mail—and how to find your own package
USPS says mailpieces determined to be of value—more than $25, or more than $20 for mail containing cash—may be held at the MRC for 60 days if barcoded or 30 days if non-barcoded. The MRC may occasionally auction held items, in lots rather than individually. USPS generally tries to return undeliverable mail to its sender; an incorrectly addressed piece with no return address may be handled locally or sent to the MRC. These policies describe USPS mail, not every carrier’s parcels or independent mystery-box inventory. See the USPS Mail Recovery Center FAQ and USPS undeliverable-mail guidance.
If you are trying to recover a package you sent or are expecting, start with tracking and USPS’s Missing Mail search rather than shopping for unclaimed merchandise. USPS says a search request can be started seven days after mailing. Follow its Missing Mail instructions.

Check the deal before you pay
- Identify the actual source claim. Does the listing describe undeliverable mail, returns, overstock, shelf pulls, or a mix? Treat sourcing and authenticity language as the seller’s statement unless independently verified.
- Find out what is—and is not—promised. Look for specific guarantees about items, brands, condition, functionality, and value. A mystery box may have no guaranteed resale value or particular contents.
- Calculate the full cost. For a fixed-price box, check shipping and any other terms shown at checkout. For an auction, account for the final bid, shipping, lot size, and the possibility that contents are not individually specified.
- Check the live listing and seller. Confirm current availability, the precise product or lot description, seller information, and return or dispute terms before placing an order.
- Do not infer an endorsement. A listing that mentions USPS, FedEx, UPS, Amazon, or another retailer does not by itself establish that organization’s involvement or approval.
What the available numbers do—and do not—show
USPS reported that more than 68 million mailpieces came to its Mail Recovery Center in 2017, in an article published December 12, 2018. The figure concerns mailpieces arriving at the MRC, not the amount or value of inventory sold by commercial mystery-box sellers. USPS Asset Performance and Accountability Manager Leslie Lissimore said, “We represent the last opportunity to complete the Postal Service’s mission to deliver.” See the USPS article.
The seller pages do not establish a comparable, independently verified average box value, buyer savings, or odds of receiving a valuable item. Without those figures, there is no evidence-based way to call one of these purchases a bargain in advance.
