Amazon’s first color Kindle is no longer a preorder. The Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition was announced on October 16, 2024, at $279.99 and began shipping October 30, 2024. It is now a regular retail product, while Amazon’s newer 2025 lineup also includes a less expensive 16GB Kindle Colorsoft and a Colorsoft Kids edition.
For U.S. buyers, start with Amazon’s Kindle Colorsoft product destination. Before ordering, confirm the model name, storage, seller, current price, delivery date, advertising configuration, return policy, and warranty. Those details can change, and listings may distinguish the 2024 Signature Edition from the 2025 standard Colorsoft.
The quick buying answer
Choose the standard Kindle Colorsoft if you specifically want color at the lowest price in the Colorsoft family. Choose the Colorsoft Signature Edition if you want 32GB of storage, wireless charging, and the premium configuration. Choose the Kindle Paperwhite if you mainly read ordinary novels and would rather pay less for a sharper black-and-white reading experience. Choose a Kindle Scribe only if writing, notebooks, or PDF work is central to your use.
The original “first color Kindle” story refers to the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, 1st Generation, released in 2024. Amazon’s current device documentation separately lists the standard Colorsoft and Colorsoft Kids as 1st-generation products released in 2025.

Amazon’s first color Kindle: what launched in 2024?
Amazon announced the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition on October 16, 2024. It was priced at $279.99 at launch, with shipping scheduled for October 30, 2024. The launch announcement is available from Amazon.
That preorder period has ended. Articles or search results that still describe the Signature Edition as “available for preorder” are using outdated framing.
The Colorsoft uses a seven-inch, paper-like color display based on E Ink technology. It is not an LCD or OLED tablet: colors are subdued rather than bright and saturated, and the device is designed for reading rather than video, web browsing, or general-purpose apps.
Key Colorsoft Signature Edition features
- Seven-inch color display
- 32GB of internal storage, with approximately 25GB available to the user
- Water-resistant design, according to Amazon’s specifications
- USB-C charging
- Wireless charging support; the charging dock is sold separately
- Auto-adjusting front light
- Dark Mode
- Color covers, illustrations, comics, graphic novels, recipes, maps, and travel books
- Yellow, orange, blue, and pink highlighting
- Manufacturer-rated battery life of up to eight weeks
- VoiceView accessibility support over Bluetooth
“Up to eight weeks” is Amazon’s battery estimate, not a guaranteed result. Actual battery life depends on brightness, wireless connectivity, audiobook use, reading time, and other settings.

Where to buy the Colorsoft now
Use Amazon’s U.S. Kindle Colorsoft destination rather than relying on an old preorder article or an indirect marketplace listing. Availability, prices, delivery estimates, and configurations can differ by country.
On the live product page, check:
- Model name: Make sure the listing says standard Colorsoft, Colorsoft Signature Edition, or Colorsoft Kids.
- Generation and storage: The 2024 Signature Edition has 32GB; the standard 2025 Colorsoft and Colorsoft Kids have 16GB.
- Seller: Confirm whether Amazon sells and ships the device or whether it comes from a third-party marketplace seller.
- Price and delivery: Treat the displayed price and delivery date as the current information; neither should be inferred from launch coverage.
- Advertising configuration: If Amazon offers ad-supported and ad-free versions, compare the prices and select deliberately.
- Returns and warranty: Review the terms shown for the exact listing and marketplace.
Amazon’s setup documentation confirms that a USB cable is included, while a 5W wall charger may be sold separately. A compatible Qi-certified charger can charge the Colorsoft Signature Edition, but its wireless charging dock is also a separate purchase. See Amazon’s charging guidance.
Colorsoft models compared
| Model | Storage | Best for | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle Colorsoft | 16GB, approximately 11.5GB available | Readers who want color at the lower price tier | Released in 2025; fewer storage resources than Signature Edition |
| Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition | 32GB, approximately 25GB available | Heavy comic, audiobook, PDF, or document users | 2024 model with wireless charging and auto-adjusting front light |
| Kindle Colorsoft Kids | 16GB | Children needing a bundled, child-focused setup | Includes a kid-friendly cover, Amazon Kids+, and a two-year worry-free guarantee |
The standard Colorsoft is likely the value choice for most adults who want color. The Signature Edition’s extra storage matters most for audiobooks, comics, graphic novels, PDFs, and large document collections—not for a typical library of text-only novels.
The Colorsoft Kids is a bundle rather than simply an adult Colorsoft with a child profile. Amazon’s June 2026 Prime Day coverage listed a promotional price of $179.99 with 12 months of Amazon Kids+. That was a limited-time promotion, not a permanent retail price. Adults who do not need Kids+, the included cover, or child-focused controls should compare the regular Colorsoft instead.

- All-new Kindle Scribe – Features an 11” glare-free display with front light, built-in notebook, AI tools, and support for popular cloud services.
- Get a pen-on-paper feel – The textured surface and responsive display create a smooth, paper-like writing experience. Plus, the included pen never needs charging and has a built-in eraser and shortcut button for tools like the highlighter.
- More room to read, write, and think – At just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, it’s redesigned for comfort, with a larger 11" display and 40% faster writing and page turns.
- Work comfortably in any light – The display automatically adapts brightness to your lighting conditions. Adjust the warmth for greater comfort at night.
- Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.
Colorsoft versus Paperwhite
The central decision is whether color content will materially improve your reading. Colorsoft is the better fit for comics, graphic novels, illustrated books, recipes, maps, travel guides, and color highlights. Paperwhite is generally the more sensible choice for readers whose library is mostly black-and-white text.
Current-generation Paperwhite facts
- The 12th-generation Paperwhite was released in 2024.
- It has a seven-inch display and IPX8 waterproofing.
- The standard model has 16GB; the Signature Edition has 32GB.
- Amazon advertises up to 12 weeks of battery life.
- The Paperwhite Signature Edition adds wireless charging and an auto-adjusting front light.
- Amazon claims page turns are 25% faster than on the prior Paperwhite generation.
Amazon’s October 2024 launch prices were $159.99 for the standard Paperwhite and $199.99 for the Paperwhite Signature Edition. Those are historical launch prices. Amazon’s June 2026 Prime Day prices were $124.99 and $144.99 respectively; those were temporary promotional prices and should not be treated as current prices.
In practical terms:
- Get Colorsoft when color is a feature you will use regularly.
- Get Paperwhite when contrast, text clarity, warm lighting, waterproofing, and price matter more.
- Get Paperwhite Signature Edition when you want 32GB and wireless charging but do not need color.
Colorsoft versus Kindle Scribe
The Kindle Scribe is not a direct replacement for Colorsoft. Colorsoft is a portable, reading-first seven-inch device. Scribe is an approximately 11-inch writing and document device that includes a Premium Pen.
The newer lineup includes the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, the third-generation black-and-white Scribe, and a 2026 Scribe without a front light. Scribe models support features such as notebooks, handwriting conversion, note search, summaries, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive integration, and Active Canvas for writing in books. The Colorsoft Scribe adds color pens and highlighters. Some AI and account features may vary by region, language, software version, or account; Amazon identifies Alexa+ note integration as U.S.-only in its announcement.

- Like-New Amazon Kindle Scribe 16GB is refurbished, tested, and certified to look and work like new and comes with the same limited warranty as a new device. Like-New Amazon devices may be packaged in generic Amazon-branded boxes.
- Kindle Scribe - A Kindle and a notebook, all in one. Redesigned flush-front display with uniform white borders and upgraded Premium Pen, feels like writing on paper.
- Write in books – Start writing on the page and Active Canvas will create space for your notes. Expand the margins to add more notes, or collapse them to see the original page.
- Built-in notebook - Create meeting notes and to-do lists, or journal all in one place. Convert handwritten notes to text and email them to yourself or your contacts.
- Notebook summaries - Summarize your notes, change their length and tone, and refine your writing with built-in AI notebook tools.
The redesigned Scribe is about 5.4mm thick and approximately 400g, but it is still substantially less pocketable than a seven-inch Kindle. It makes sense for students, professionals, artists, and readers who annotate documents. It is excessive for someone who simply wants to read novels in bed or during a commute.
Amazon’s June 2026 Prime Day promotional prices were $519.99 for the 64GB Scribe Colorsoft and $419.99 for the 64GB black-and-white Scribe. These dated deal prices illustrate the price premium for writing hardware; they are not current prices.
Storage: how much do you actually need?
Advertised capacity includes space used by the operating system, so usable storage is lower:
| Device capacity | Approximate usable storage |
|---|---|
| 16GB Colorsoft or Paperwhite | 11.5GB |
| 32GB Colorsoft Signature or Paperwhite Signature | 25GB |
| 32GB Scribe Colorsoft | 21.18GB |
| 64GB Scribe | 49.94GB |
For ordinary ebooks, 16GB is ample. Consider 32GB if you keep many audiobooks, comics, graphic novels, PDFs, or large documents downloaded at once. Storage alone is not a strong reason for a novel-only reader to buy the most expensive model.

Launch prices versus current prices
Kindle pricing changes frequently around Amazon sales events. The following figures are historical reference points, not live quotes:
| Model | Launch or dated promotional price | Date and context |
|---|---|---|
| Colorsoft Signature Edition | $279.99 | October 2024 launch price |
| Standard Colorsoft | $159.99 | June 2026 Prime Day promotion |
| Colorsoft Kids | $179.99 | June 2026 Prime Day promotion |
| Paperwhite | $159.99 launch; $124.99 promotion | October 2024 launch; June 2026 Prime Day |
| Paperwhite Signature Edition | $199.99 launch; $144.99 promotion | October 2024 launch; June 2026 Prime Day |
| Scribe Colorsoft, 64GB | $519.99 | June 2026 Prime Day promotion |
| Black-and-white Scribe, 64GB | $419.99 | June 2026 Prime Day promotion |
When publishing or shopping, label any live quote with the marketplace and date checked. Do not assume a Prime membership is required to own a Kindle; it may affect shipping or eligibility for particular promotions, but the device itself is not dependent on Prime.
Accessories and subscriptions
Accessories
- Case or folio: Usually a separate purchase unless a bundle explicitly includes one.
- Wall charger: Check the box contents; Amazon says a 5W charger may be sold separately.
- Wireless charging dock: Required for dock-based wireless charging and sold separately for compatible Colorsoft Signature models.
- Screen protector: A matte protector can reduce perceived display clarity, so weigh protection against readability.
- Scribe folio and replacement Premium Pen: Separate costs to consider if buying a Scribe.
Kindle Unlimited
Kindle Unlimited is an optional subscription catalog, not a requirement for using a Kindle. Promotional offers can vary by device, account, marketplace, and date. Amazon’s 2024 launch coverage mentioned a three-month offer on new devices, but buyers should verify the exact offer, renewal terms, eligibility, and catalog before subscribing.
Amazon Kids+
Amazon Kids+ is relevant to the Colorsoft Kids bundle because it supplies child-focused books and audiobooks alongside parental controls. Bundled durations vary: Amazon’s June 2026 promotion listed 12 months with Colorsoft Kids. Do not assume the same duration applies to every Kindle Kids product or promotion.

Which Kindle should you get?
- Best lower-cost color choice: Standard Kindle Colorsoft.
- Best premium color choice: Colorsoft Signature Edition, if you need 32GB or value wireless charging and the auto-adjusting light.
- Best for novels: Kindle Paperwhite.
- Best for color-reading children: Colorsoft Kids, when the cover, Kids+, parental controls, and worry-free guarantee justify the bundle.
- Best for writing and PDFs: Kindle Scribe Colorsoft or black-and-white Scribe, depending on whether color is useful.
- Best for a compact budget reader: The entry-level Kindle, if you do not need waterproofing or color.
Amazon’s entry-level Kindle launched in 2024 from $109.99. It remains the basic alternative for readers who want a small, lower-cost e-reader and do not need the Colorsoft or Paperwhite feature set.
Common buying mistakes
- Ordering the 2024 Signature Edition when the cheaper 2025 standard Colorsoft would meet your needs.
- Assuming every Colorsoft listing has the same storage or release year.
- Using the $279.99 launch price—or a June 2026 Prime Day price—as though it were today’s price.
- Buying a Scribe expecting a pocket-sized reading device.
- Assuming a wall charger, case, or wireless charging dock is included.
- Comparing Colorsoft Kids directly with an adult model without valuing its cover, Kids+ subscription, and warranty.
- Assuming all Kindle books display full color; rendering depends on the book format and content.
- Ignoring the seller, return policy, warranty, marketplace, and account restrictions on international or third-party listings.
- Assuming waterproofing means indestructibility or protection in every circumstance.
Bottom line
The original first color Kindle is a real, available product—not a current preorder. For most shoppers who specifically want color, begin by comparing Amazon’s 16GB standard Colorsoft with the 32GB Colorsoft Signature Edition. Pay extra for the Signature model only when its storage and convenience features matter. If your library is mostly novels, the Paperwhite is likely the better value; if you need handwriting and document tools, move up to Scribe rather than treating Colorsoft as a tablet replacement.
