The United States leads the country-level counts of millionaires, centi-millionaires and billionaires in the 2025 Henley-attributed comparison, with China in second place. Those figures measure liquid investable wealth in U.S. dollars and use a December 2024 snapshot; they are not a verified map of where each person lives.
Which countries have the most wealthy people?
The following figures are from Henley & Partners data reported by Visual Capitalist. They count people by country in three liquid-investable-wealth tiers, with the reference date of December 2024. A centi-millionaire is someone with at least $100 million in liquid investable wealth; the millionaire and billionaire tiers use the corresponding $1 million and $1 billion thresholds.

Visual Capitalist’s country-level chart attributes these counts to Henley & Partners and labels the reference data December 2024. The global total is included for context; it is not a country.
What the tiers show
Millionaires
The United States accounts for 6,041,600 people in the chart’s millionaire tier, compared with 827,900 in China. The global count is 16,505,000. These are counts based on liquid investable wealth, not a count of everyone whose total assets or estimated net worth exceed $1 million.

Centi-millionaires
The chart reports 10,835 centi-millionaires in the United States and 2,258 in China, out of 30,450 worldwide. This tier refers to at least $100 million in liquid investable wealth.
Billionaires
For the same Henley-attributed snapshot and wealth definition, the chart counts 867 billionaires in the United States and 278 in China, with 2,656 worldwide. Other prominent billionaire lists report different totals because they use different datasets and methods.

Why do billionaire counts differ by source?
A billionaire total is meaningful only alongside its publisher, wealth definition, classification rules and estimate date. The Henley-attributed chart measures liquid investable wealth and uses a December 2024 reference date. Forbes’ annual list estimates net worth, while UBS reports results from its own billionaire database and wealth-assessment methodology.

Forbes’ separate 2025 country ranking counts 902 billionaires in the United States, 450 in China and 205 in India, with net-worth estimates dated March 7, 2025. UBS’ Billionaire Ambitions Report 2025 reports 924 in the United States and 470 in mainland China using the UBS/PwC Billionaires database and its wealth-assessment methodology.

These totals should not be averaged or treated as competing measurements of precisely the same group. Each belongs to a specific publisher’s dataset and reference period. Forbes also operates a real-time ranking: its methodology says public holdings update every five minutes while relevant markets are open, with a 15-minute stock-price delay, and fortunes significantly tied to private companies update daily. A live figure can therefore move and should not be substituted for a dated annual count.

Not necessarily. A country-level wealth count does not, by itself, establish a person’s primary residence. Citizenship, residence and a publisher’s country classification can differ. Forbes’ 2025 article describes Elon Musk as a U.S. citizen whose primary residence has been the United States; it also reports that Muhammed Aziz Khan had been living in Singapore and transferred his citizenship there. These examples illustrate why the terms should not be treated as interchangeable, but they do not turn a country ranking into a comprehensive residence database.

The Henley-attributed visualization compares countries, not cities. The cited 2025 sources do not establish a comparable city ranking or a complete list of wealthy people’s home addresses, so a city-by-city claim cannot be inferred from these country totals.

How to read a wealth-location ranking
- Check the wealth threshold: millionaire, centi-millionaire and billionaire labels refer to different levels of wealth.
- Check what is counted: liquid investable wealth is not the same measure as estimated net worth.
- Check the geographic rule: a country classification may not mean primary residence, citizenship or a recorded home address unless the publisher specifies that rule.
- Check the geographic unit: country totals do not establish city totals.
- Check the date: a fixed snapshot, an annual list and a real-time ranking can yield different counts.
