More than two billion ounces have been mined from the basin, yet estimates of what remains underground are not the same as economically recoverable reserves.
Where is the world’s largest gold deposit?
The Witwatersrand Basin lies in South Africa. Its gold-bearing rocks belong to the Witwatersrand Supergroup, a thick sedimentary succession in the Kaapvaal Craton. Gold occurs in conglomerate reefs—layers of rounded pebbles and other material cemented together. The U.S. Geological Survey describes quartz-pebble-conglomerate deposits as Earth’s largest gold repository type, largely because of the Witwatersrand Basin, and says most researchers favor a modified paleoplacer origin, later altered by metamorphic and hydrothermal processes. The origin has been debated.
“Largest” depends on the measure. South Africa’s InvestSA investment fact sheet calls the basin the world’s largest gold deposit and reports that more than two billion ounces have been mined from it. The USGS describes it more specifically as the world’s largest resource of produced gold. These descriptions concern the basin’s geological endowment and historic production; they do not establish that it has the world’s largest current economically recoverable reserve.
How much gold has been mined, and how much may remain?
A 2023 paper, “Where is all the gold?”, estimates that 50,200 tonnes had been produced from the basin through 2019, with 48,100 ± 9,000 tonnes remaining to be extracted. It separately estimates 1,600 ± 600 tonnes in surface tailings impoundments, using data up to 2005. These are estimates with different scopes and dates; they should not be added together or treated as a current reserve statement.

- COMPLETE GOLD PANNING KIT FOR ADULTS & BEGINNERS: Scoop paydirt with the 12" scoop, screen it through the 6" mini gold classifier, run it through the pocket sluice box, then finish in two patented spiral riffle gold pans. Everything for a first day on the creek, packed in one drawstring backpack.
- 12" POCKET SLUICE BOX WITH MINERS MOSS: A rubber riffle mat and miners moss trap heavy gold in a sluice small enough to carry anywhere. Use it to sample-test a gravel bar before hauling in big gear, clean up concentrates at home, or show kids how a sluice works.
- PATENTED SPIRAL RIFFLE GOLD PANS (US 12,582,996): Deep-walled 9" and 11" pans built like a classic prospector's pan, not a shallow dish. Aggressive riffles knock out light material fast, and the spiral riffles hold the fine flakes that flat-bottom pans wash away during finish panning.
- 35 LB RARE EARTH MAGNET, SNUFFER BOTTLE & MAGNIFIER TWEEZERS: The HUNTLEY sweeper wand's 35 lb rare earth magnet pulls black sand from your concentrates, the snuffer bottle vacuums gold flakes off the pan, and stainless magnifier tweezers let you spot and pick out flakes too small to grab by hand. Three glass gold vials hold the day's take.
- DESIGNED BY KEYESVILLE, CALIFORNIA PROSPECTORS: Sluice Fox kits are designed by prospectors who learned to pan in historic Keyesville, in California's Kern River gold country, and assembled in our own warehouses near the Sierra and Appalachian mountains. A gift that gets a family outdoors, from a brand that has been in the creek, not just a catalog.
The authors could not compile reliable mine-production statistics after 2005 and estimated later production with greater error. They also state that the remaining-gold figure is not a resource or reserve reported under a recognized minerals reporting code. It indicates the scale of the geological endowment, not a promise that the gold can be profitably mined.
Does “accessible to everyone” mean the public can get the gold?
No. The available sources describe industrial mining and do not establish unrestricted public access to mines or permission for independent gold extraction. A deposit can be widely known without being open to visitors or prospectors.

Even within mining leases, access is not the same as economic recoverability. The 2023 synthesis estimates that about 30% of the 11,000 tonnes it calculated as remaining in mining leases at the end of 2019 would not be accessible to economic extraction using current labour-intensive methods. The paper says nearly all estimated remaining gold would be inaccessible using current mining methods. Those estimates reflect the study’s methods and assumptions, not a universal legal or engineering ruling.

The deposits are deep underground
Harmony Gold’s technical report describes Mponeng, near Carletonville, as an operating deep-level underground mine. Its property description reports development at 3,841 metres below mine datum, effective June 30, 2024. That is a measure of the mine’s development relative to its datum, not a statement that every working or gold-bearing reef lies at exactly that depth. It illustrates the scale and specialized infrastructure involved in reaching some Witwatersrand ore.

Geological gold is not automatically mineable gold
Gold remaining in rock may be too deep, difficult or costly to reach with available methods. Whether it can be extracted economically depends on the location and characteristics of the deposit, mining technology, operating conditions and costs. A large estimate of gold underground therefore cannot be read as the amount a company could profitably recover today.
Surface tailings still require processing
Tailings are mine-processing residues stored at the surface, so they are physically more accessible than deep underground reefs. But recovering gold from them still requires industrial processing. The 2023 paper estimates only a portion of the gold in tailings could be recovered using modern metallurgical techniques; it does not establish that all estimated tailings gold is recoverable or profitable.

What the headline can—and cannot—mean
- “Largest gold deposit”: Supported when describing the Witwatersrand Basin’s geological endowment and historical production, not as a confirmed ranking of current economic reserves.
- “Accessible” as in publicly known: Yes; the basin and its gold deposits are documented in scientific and government sources.
- “Accessible to everyone” as in open to enter or mine: Not established. The sources describe deep industrial mines, not unrestricted public access.
- “Gold remaining” as gold available to buy or extract: No. The published remaining-gold estimate is uncertain, is not a code-compliant resource or reserve, and does not mean the gold is economically recoverable.
