Re:

Where Is the Security Code on a Visa Gift Card?

A Visa gift card’s checkout code usually means its CVV or security code, found on the back near the signature panel. Learn how to tell it apart from a PIN or promotional code.

For a regular online purchase, “redeem code” usually means the card’s CVV or security code. Look on the back of the Visa gift card, typically around the signature panel. You enter that code separately from the card number and expiration date. If a website specifically asks for a promotional or reward code, check the offer or issuer that provided it instead.

Where to find the Visa gift card security code

Turn the card over and check the signature panel and the area beside it. The security code is commonly three digits, but placement can vary by issuer. For example, The Bancorp Bank’s Consumer Card Access instructions place its card’s three-digit code immediately after the signature block; that is an issuer-specific example, not a guarantee for every card. The Bancorp Bank / Consumer Card Access and Sumitomo Mitsui Card Company likewise describe the three-digit code on the reverse signature panel for their products.

If the card has a peel-off sticker or activation label, check it for card-specific instructions. Visa Canada says that when activation is required, instructions and a toll-free number typically appear on a sticker. Visa Canada’s gift-card guidance

Which details to enter at checkout

Visa says an online checkout uses the card’s 16-digit number, expiration date, and CVV in separate form fields. The CVV is not the card number or a PIN. Visa’s Visa Gift Card guidance

  • Card number: the 16-digit number on the card.
  • Expiration date: enter it in the format requested by the checkout form.
  • CVV or security code: the code printed on the back, usually near the signature panel.

If a site asks for a “redeem code”

Visa’s general Visa Gift Card checkout instructions do not identify a separate redeem code. If the site is processing an ordinary card payment, look for a CVV or security-code field and enter the code from the card. If the request is tied to a promotion, reward, or offer, use the code supplied with that offer or contact the organization that issued it. Do not enter a PIN in a CVV field.

If you cannot find the code or the payment is declined

  • Check the reverse side, including around the signature panel, and read any sticker or card instructions.
  • Confirm the checkout is asking for a CVV or security code, rather than a PIN or a promotion-specific code.
  • Use the issuer’s instructions for activation and balance checks. Visa says its U.S. balance-check process may ask for the 16-digit number and security code; Visa Canada says activation instructions, when needed, typically appear on a sticker.
  • If the code is missing or a purchase is declined despite a sufficient balance, contact the issuer using the toll-free number or website printed on the card. Visa advises contacting the issuer for a declined purchase.

Only provide the card details on a checkout or issuer site you trust. Do not share the card number or security code with an untrusted person or website.
