The latest specific report located says Ruth Madoff was living in an assisted-living facility near New York in 2024. That account does not independently confirm where she lives today: the reviewed sources do not establish her location as of October 2026. Earlier reporting places her in South Florida, then Old Greenwich, Connecticut, and later in her former daughter-in-law’s household.
Where is Ruth Madoff now?
Richard Behar’s 2024 Forbes excerpt from Madoff: The Final Word reported that Ruth was residing in an assisted-living facility near New York. This is the latest specific account located, not an independently verified 2026 address or a confirmed description of her present living arrangements. Read the 2024 account.
Her reported residences changed over time, and media coverage itself cautioned against treating older location reports as current. In April 2021, NBC New York noted that her whereabouts and lifestyle had not been reported after an earlier account of a move to an Old Greenwich condominium. NBC New York’s 2021 report is a reminder that a dated address is not a live location update.
What happened to Bernie Madoff’s wife after the scandal?
From South Florida to Connecticut
In a 2011 CBS 60 Minutes interview, Ruth described living in a three-room apartment in South Florida. CT Insider later reported that she moved to Old Greenwich in 2012 to be near her son Andrew and her grandchildren. In 2021, Fox Business reported that she was living with the family of Susan Elkin, her former daughter-in-law, in a home Elkin owned. These reports document different periods; they do not establish her current residence. CBS’s 2011 interview, CT Insider’s account, and Fox Business’s 2021 report provide the timeline.

Her account of the marriage after Mark’s death
In the 2011 interview, Ruth said that after their son Mark died, she told Bernie she was finished with him and would not visit or speak with him by phone. She also said she did not miss their former apartment. Those were statements made in 2011, not evidence of her current views.
CT Insider reported that Mark died by suicide in 2010 and Andrew died in 2014. Its account connected Ruth’s 2012 move to Old Greenwich with being near Andrew and her grandchildren; it does not establish what she feels or how she lives today.

What is established about Bernie Madoff’s crimes and Ruth’s role?
Bernard Madoff pleaded guilty to 11 federal felonies on March 12, 2009. The U.S. Department of Justice describes how he used his position as chairman of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities to steal billions from clients. Its 2017 account also says more than $23 million was recovered from estates connected to his sons and daughter-in-law for distribution to victims. Those are legal and asset-recovery facts about the case; they do not, on their own, establish what Ruth knew or did. See the Department of Justice account.
The sources cited here do not establish that Ruth was charged with a crime. Marriage, family ties, residence, or allegations attributed to a later author are not proof of criminal knowledge or conduct.
