Bloom’s argument is that delivering DC closer to computing equipment could avoid some of the conversion and electrical equipment required in a conventional AC power path. That explanation describes Bloom’s proposed mechanism; the headline estimate does not show how much equipment a particular project would actually avoid. The comparison also depends on the alternative design: the article says a grid-based data center could convert AC to 800-volt DC at the facility edge, potentially competing with some of the conversion savings Bloom claims.
Why the $5.5 billion figure is different
The article reports a separate Bloom model estimate: $5.5 billion, or 9%, lower total cost of ownership over five years. That is a different measure and time horizon from the $3.6 billion estimate. The former is a five-year ownership-cost projection; the latter is a reduction in non-chip construction costs. They should not be added together or treated as interchangeable savings.

What the estimate does not establish
The Motley Fool report does not provide Bloom’s full model or enough detail to reproduce either estimate independently. It does not disclose the cost categories, energy and fuel prices, utilization assumptions, construction schedule, fuel-cell replacement assumptions, or sensitivity ranges behind the calculation. Nor does it cite an independent validation or a completed, comparable 1-gigawatt project demonstrating the claimed saving.
Accordingly, the $3.6 billion should be read as Bloom’s modeled outcome for a specific hypothetical comparison, not as an industry-wide result or a guaranteed saving for any 1-gigawatt data center. The report says project economics vary by site.

Why location and competing designs matter
A project’s power architecture is only one part of its economics. Fuel supply and infrastructure timing can affect whether an on-site generation plan works as intended. The article reports a natural-gas pipeline delay associated with Oracle’s planned Project Jupiter site, while also reporting that Oracle said the project remained on schedule and Bloom said Oracle remained committed to its contract. Those statements do not establish the project’s eventual outcome, but they illustrate why site-specific infrastructure matters.

That is a reported plan, not a guaranteed delivery date, and the described conversion design would not require Bloom fuel cells. Whether that kind of grid-based architecture changes the economics depends on the actual project design and costs.
