For most people who file as calendar-year individuals, Tax Day for a 2024 federal income tax return was April 15, 2025. That date has passed. If you still have not filed, the IRS advises filing as soon as possible; an extension may have moved the filing deadline to October 15, 2025, but it did not extend the time to pay. This article covers federal individual income tax, not state or business deadlines.
When was Tax Day 2025?
The regular deadline for most calendar-year individuals to file a 2024 federal income tax return and pay any tax due was April 15, 2025. The IRS noted that this was the 70th anniversary of the April 15 federal filing deadline. IRS Tax Day 2025 guidance and the IRS announcement marking the anniversary provide the official details.
Can you still file a 2024 federal tax return?
Yes. If you missed the deadline and have not filed, the IRS advises submitting your return as soon as possible. If you owe tax, file promptly and pay what you can. Interest and penalties may continue to accrue on unpaid tax; their amount depends on your circumstances. Payment-plan options may be available. Did a tax extension give you more time to pay?
No. The IRS put it plainly in Tax Tip 2025-26, published April 15, 2025: “An extension gives extra time to file, but it does not give taxpayers extra time to pay if they owe.” A taxpayer generally had to request an automatic six-month extension by the original due date, using Form 4868. Could a special deadline have applied?
Possibly. IRS relief can postpone deadlines for eligible taxpayers in designated areas, and the particular notice controls which people and obligations qualify. For example, an IRS notice set November 3, 2025 as the deadline for certain eligible taxpayers in Missouri for specified filing and payment obligations, including some obligations originally due April 15. It also covered estimated payments normally due April 15, June 16, and September 15. That date was specific to the covered taxpayers and obligations, not a nationwide extension. Check the Missouri disaster-relief notice or the relevant IRS notice for your location. Special rules may also apply to some military personnel and people abroad; consult the IRS When to file guidance for your situation. State income tax deadlines are separate; check your state tax agency.
Was April 15 also an estimated tax deadline?
Yes, but that was a separate obligation. April 15, 2025 was the first estimated tax payment due date for tax year 2025, according to an IRS release published April 10. The IRS calendar also listed June 16 and September 15, 2025 for later estimated tax periods. These payments apply to tax year 2025 income; they do not replace filing a 2024 annual return.
