Usually, no. London uses pound sterling (£/GBP), but most visitors can pay with a widely accepted credit or debit card, contactless card, or mobile wallet. You should still carry a backup payment method and check your card issuer’s foreign-transaction and ATM fees. Euros are not a dependable substitute: London businesses very rarely accept them.

What money is used in London?

The United Kingdom’s currency is pound sterling (£), divided into 100 pence. London prices are quoted in pounds, not euros. Visit London’s British money and UK currency guidance confirms the denomination and currency basics.

Some businesses may accept cash, but acceptance is a merchant decision. Do not assume a shop must take notes or coins simply because pounds are legal tender.

Can you pay by card in London?

Most restaurants, bars, cafés and shops accept major credit and debit cards. Contactless is common, and some venues are card- or contactless-only. Visit London recommends carrying an alternative payment method in case a card is declined, a terminal is unavailable or a business does not accept your preferred payment type.

Before you leave

  • Confirm that your issuer allows overseas and contactless transactions.
  • Check foreign-transaction, currency-conversion and ATM-withdrawal fees.
  • Ask whether your bank requires a travel notice.
  • Set up a second card or mobile wallet as a backup.

Acceptance and fees vary by issuer and card, so no universal “London fee” or guarantee that every overseas card will work applies.

Do you need cash for London transport?

You do not need pounds in cash for most Transport for London (TfL) journeys. TfL accepts an eligible contactless card or mobile device for pay-as-you-go travel, and Oyster or Visitor Oyster cards are alternatives. On journeys requiring both taps, use the same physical card or the same device to touch in and out. TfL notes that overseas charges may apply to non-UK cards. See TfL’s visitor payment guidance for current rules.

Contactless or Oyster: which is better?

Option Useful when Check first
Existing contactless bank card Paying in shops and using TfL pay-as-you-go Overseas contactless access, TfL acceptance, issuer fees and any travel-notice requirement
Phone or watch wallet Your device supports contactless payments on TfL Wallet setup, battery/device access and issuer fees; use the same device for both taps
Oyster or Visitor Oyster You prefer a prepaid travel balance or your foreign card/device is unsuitable Purchase cost, top-ups, coverage and current terms; see Visit London’s Oyster guidance
Cash in pounds A merchant or personal preference requires cash, or your cards fail Exchange rate, commission, ATM operator charge and your bank’s fee

The practical choice depends on whether your foreign card works abroad, how much your issuer charges, whether you want prepaid spending control and whether each traveler needs a separate payment card or device.

Should you exchange money before arriving?

There is no need for most travelers to obtain a large supply of banknotes in advance. If you want cash, exchange only what you are comfortable carrying and compare the final number of pounds received after every commission and fee—not just the advertised exchange rate. An international ATM withdrawal can also add both bank and operator charges.

Keep a modest cash option if you prefer it or want resilience, but do not plan on euros: Visit London says they are very rarely accepted by London businesses. Its London visitor FAQs provide related arrival guidance.

Does “legal tender” mean every shop must accept cash?

No. Legal tender is a technical concept, not a guarantee that every merchant accepts a particular payment method. The Bank of England explains that rules vary within the UK and states: “Many common and safe payment methods such as cheques, debit cards and contactless are not legal tender.” Read What is legal tender? for the distinction. In practice, a business can choose whether to accept cash, cards or contactless.
