When to Claim Social Security: Compare Benefits at 62, Full Retirement Age, and 70

Claiming at 62 starts checks sooner but reduces the worker benefit; waiting raises it through age 70. Compare your own SSA estimates, FRA, work plans, and household needs.

Claiming Social Security retirement benefits at 62 starts payments sooner but permanently reduces the worker’s monthly benefit compared with waiting until full retirement age (FRA). Waiting beyond FRA increases the monthly amount through age 70; delaying past 70 adds no further retirement credits. The right choice depends on your own estimate, cash needs, work plans, health, and household benefits—not on a single age that is best for everyone.

How claiming age changes your Social Security benefit

Social Security calculates a worker’s retirement benefit from their covered earnings record and then adjusts the amount based on when benefits begin. Age 62 is the earliest age to claim retirement benefits. Claiming before FRA reduces the worker benefit; claiming at FRA provides the full primary benefit amount calculated from the record; and delaying beyond FRA earns delayed retirement credits through age 70.

The trade-off is between the size of each monthly payment and when payments begin. Starting early means more years of checks, but each check is smaller. Waiting means giving up checks during the delay in exchange for a higher monthly benefit later. Your personal estimates and circumstances are more useful than a generic break-even age, which the Social Security Administration (SSA) does not establish as a universal answer.

It helps to separate three questions: when you stop working, when you apply for Social Security, and when you need other retirement income to cover expenses. They are related, but they are not the same decision. You may stop work before claiming, or continue working after benefits begin. Each choice can affect cash flow differently, and continued work may also change the earnings record used to calculate your benefit.

Claiming at 62 is an available option, not an instruction to claim as soon as you qualify. Similarly, reaching FRA does not require you to start then: if you delay, credits can raise your worker benefit through age 70. The comparison should therefore include both the monthly amount and the period during which you would have received payments under each option. The larger check at a later age is not, by itself, enough to establish which timing suits you.

What is full retirement age?

Full retirement age is the age at which a worker becomes eligible for the unreduced primary retirement benefit based on their earnings record. It varies by birth year; it is not automatically 65. For people reaching age 62 in 2026, FRA is 67. The SSA’s 2026 Retirement Benefits booklet lists intermediate FRA values for birth years 1955 through 1959, from 66 years and 2 months to 66 years and 10 months, and an FRA of 67 for people born in 1960 or later. SSA’s 2026 Retirement Benefits booklet provides the birth-year schedule.

Find your own FRA before comparing age 62 with 70: the number of months between your claim date and FRA affects the early-claim reduction. For a person whose FRA is 67, claiming at 62 can reduce the benefit by as much as 30%, according to the SSA’s 2026 publication. A different FRA means a different reduction schedule.

FRA is a Social Security benchmark, not the same as Medicare’s general eligibility age. Medicare eligibility generally begins at 65, even for someone whose FRA is later. Do not use age 65 as a stand-in for your FRA when estimating the effect of an early claim.

Compare claiming at 62, FRA, and 70

Claiming time Effect on worker’s monthly benefit What the trade-off means
Age 62 Earliest eligibility. The amount is reduced for each month claimed before FRA. For a person with FRA 67, the reduction can be as much as 30%. Payments start sooner, but the monthly worker benefit is lower than if the same person waited until FRA or later.
Full retirement age The worker receives the full primary benefit amount calculated from their covered earnings record. Payments begin later than at 62, without the early-claim reduction or delayed credits.
Age 70 Delayed retirement credits raise the monthly benefit for eligible delay months after FRA. For people born in 1943 or later, credits accrue at 8% per year; credits stop at 70. The worker gives up checks during the delay for a higher monthly amount afterward. Waiting beyond 70 does not increase the retirement benefit further.

The 8% figure is the annual delayed retirement credit for people born in 1943 or later, not an extra 8% for every year after age 70. The amount of increase depends on how long a person delays after their FRA and ends at 70. The SSA states, “There is no additional benefit increase after you reach age 70, even if you continue to delay starting benefits.” See its guidance on receiving benefits before full retirement age.

These options describe the worker’s retirement benefit. They do not mean every person will see the same percentage difference or dollar increase: the underlying estimate depends on the individual’s earnings record, birth date, and claim date. The 30% example applies to a person with FRA 67 who claims at 62; do not assume that percentage applies to someone with another FRA or a different claim month.

Think of the comparison as a cash-flow choice. Claiming earlier provides payments during years when a person who waits receives none, while waiting trades those earlier checks for a higher monthly amount later. Your needs for income now, other sources of income while waiting, and expectations about health and longevity can all matter. The SSA does not establish one break-even age for everyone, so a universal rule based only on how long it takes the larger check to catch up would be misleading.

What the SSA’s 2026 maximum examples show—and what they do not

The SSA’s 2026 publication gives these maximum-benefit examples for a person who had maximum-taxable earnings in every year beginning at age 22 and claims in 2026:

Claiming age SSA example, per month
62 $2,969
Full retirement age $4,152
70 $5,181

These are SSA’s 2026 maximum examples, not average benefits, a forecast for a typical household, or a personalized estimate. Your amount depends on your earnings record, birth date, and claiming date. Use the SSA’s retirement benefit calculators and your account rather than treating the maximum figures as a planning target.

The amounts illustrate the effect of claim timing for a particular high-earnings example; they do not tell you what you personally will receive or whether delaying fits your finances. The stated earnings assumption is specific: maximum-taxable earnings in every year beginning at age 22, with a claim in 2026. Unless your record matches the assumptions, the dollar amounts are not a useful proxy for your own benefit. They are also dated examples, so check current SSA information rather than carrying the figures forward as if they were permanent.

Your earnings record matters as much as your claiming age

The SSA calculates retirement benefits using a worker’s highest 35 years of earnings. If the worker has fewer than 35 years with earnings, zeroes are included for the missing years. Working longer can also replace a lower-earning year in the calculation with a higher-earning one—even if the worker already has 35 years. This means the age you stop working and the age you claim benefits are separate decisions: stopping work does not require you to claim immediately, and working longer may affect the earnings record as well as your cash flow. The SSA explains the calculation in its retirement benefit planning guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, someone with fewer than 35 earnings years will have zeroes included for the missing years in the calculation. If that person works longer and adds earnings years, the record may change. A person with 35 or more years may also see a change if a new year of earnings replaces a lower-earning year among the years used. The size or direction of any change depends on the person’s actual record; continued work does not guarantee a particular increase.

Check the earnings information in your my Social Security account as part of the comparison. A missing or incorrect year could make an estimate less useful, and an estimate based on an assumed future work pattern may differ from one based on stopping work. Review what the account shows and compare estimates in light of whether you expect to keep earning income. Claiming age changes the benefit timing adjustment; earnings history helps determine the underlying worker benefit.

If you claim while working: the 2026 earnings test

If you receive retirement benefits before FRA and continue working, the earnings test may temporarily withhold some benefits when earnings exceed the applicable annual limit. These are 2026 limits; SSA updates them over time.

2026 situation Earnings limit Withholding rule
Below FRA for the entire year $24,480 $1 in benefits is withheld for every $2 earned above the limit.
Reaching FRA during 2026 $65,160, counting earnings only before the month FRA is reached $1 in benefits is withheld for every $3 earned above the limit before the FRA month.

The earnings test stops beginning in the month you reach FRA. SSA may recalculate benefits to account for months in which payments were withheld. A temporary withholding under the earnings test is not the same as the permanent reduction that results from claiming before FRA. Check SSA’s rules for working while receiving benefits for details and updates.

In the year you reach FRA, the higher limit applies only to earnings before the month you reach FRA; do not count earnings after that month toward that pre-FRA limit. If you remain below FRA for the entire year, the lower limit and the one-for-every-two withholding rule apply. These are earnings-test rules for 2026, not fixed limits for future years, so someone planning a later claim should confirm the applicable SSA figures then.

Withholding under the test affects payments during the applicable period; it should not be described as erasing or reversing the early-claim reduction. The two issues are distinct: claiming before FRA reduces the worker’s monthly benefit, while the earnings test can withhold benefits when earnings cross the relevant limit. If you plan to work, compare your expected earnings and claim timing with the current rules instead of assuming that every dollar of wages will simply be added to your monthly Social Security payment.

Consider spouse, divorced-spouse, and survivor benefits

A worker-only comparison may not describe the best timing for a household. If you may qualify for both retirement and spouse benefits, SSA’s deemed-filing rules generally require many applicants to file for both; the rules differ by birth date. Survivor benefits follow separate rules. In some circumstances, a surviving spouse can claim survivor benefits while delaying their own retirement benefit.

Do not assume that the age comparison for your own worker benefit determines the right choice for spouse or survivor benefits. Check your specific eligibility and options with SSA. Its filing rules for retirement and spouse benefits explain the distinctions. SSA notes, “Determining when to start your Social Security benefits is a personal decision.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In particular, a person who is eligible for more than one type of benefit should not assume they can freely choose any sequence without regard to SSA filing rules. Deemed filing generally applies to many people eligible for both retirement and spouse benefits, with differences based on birth date. Survivor benefits are treated separately, which is why the worker-only table cannot resolve a household’s survivor strategy. Ask SSA about your circumstances rather than applying one benefit’s age comparison to another.

Medicare starts on a separate timeline

Medicare eligibility generally begins at 65, while Social Security FRA depends on birth year and can be 67. Delaying Social Security does not automatically delay Medicare enrollment. If you postpone Social Security, consider whether you need to sign up for Medicare at 65. Review SSA’s Medicare information and confirm enrollment requirements for your situation.

This matters when comparing cash flow across the years before FRA or age 70. Do not treat a decision to delay retirement benefits as a decision to delay Medicare. If you are approaching 65 and expect to postpone Social Security, check enrollment requirements separately and in time to make the appropriate arrangements for your circumstances.

Taxes and other income can change the practical comparison

Social Security benefits may be taxable. Whether they are taxable, and how much tax may apply, depends on other income and filing circumstances. SSA points beneficiaries to IRS resources and offers options for withholding federal income tax from benefits. Do not assume that the gross monthly estimate is the amount you will keep after taxes; evaluate the tax effect using your own income and filing details. See SSA’s information about taxes on benefits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Taxes are one part of the comparison, not a reason to assume that a particular claim age will always produce a better after-tax result. Your other income and filing circumstances affect the tax picture. Likewise, cash needs and income available while you delay can change how practical it is to wait for a larger monthly benefit. The SSA estimate gives you a starting point for the benefit amount; it does not by itself decide how the amount fits with your household budget, taxes, or other retirement income.

How to compare your own estimates

  1. Identify your FRA. Use your birth year and the SSA schedule; do not assume that FRA is 65.
  2. Sign in to your my Social Security account. Review the estimate tied to your earnings record and compare the available claiming ages from 62 through 70.
  3. Check the earnings record. Look for missing or incorrect earnings. Remember that the 35-year calculation can include zeroes for years without earnings and may change if you work longer.
  4. Compare monthly amounts with timing. Note both the estimated payment and how many years you would receive payments under each start date. Avoid relying on a universal break-even age.
  5. Test the comparison against your circumstances. Account for cash needs while waiting, other income, current or planned work, health and longevity assumptions, spouse or survivor benefits, and taxes.
  6. Plan separately for Medicare. If you delay Social Security, check whether you need to enroll in Medicare at 65.

When reviewing estimates, make sure you understand what earnings assumptions they use and how a different work plan could change the amount. If you intend to stop working, compare estimates on that basis; if you expect to keep working, consider whether future earnings could replace lower-earning years in the 35-year calculation. Do not confuse a possible change to the underlying earnings calculation with the separate adjustment for claiming before or after FRA.

Then think through the period between the age you might claim and the age you might otherwise wait to claim. What income would cover expenses during that time? Would you rely on savings or another source of income? How important is a larger monthly payment later relative to receiving checks sooner? The answers depend on your own resources and priorities. Health and longevity assumptions can also inform the choice, but the SSA does not establish a single age that works best for everyone.

For working claimants, add the earnings test to that review. Use the current year’s limit and withholding rule for the period before FRA, and remember that the test ends beginning in the month FRA is reached. For household planning, check whether spouse, divorced-spouse, or survivor rules apply before treating a worker estimate as the entire household answer. Consider taxes based on your own filing circumstances, and keep Medicare enrollment on its separate age-65 track.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The SSA says to check your account to see eligibility and how much you could receive when applying at different times between 62 and 70. Start with its retirement planning page and your personal estimate; if household rules or tax choices are difficult to evaluate, a qualified retirement-income professional may be an optional source of help, not a requirement. SSA’s account and tools are the directly relevant starting point; no paid calculator or product is required to make the initial comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should I start receiving my Social Security retirement benefits?

There is no single best age for everyone. Claiming at 62 starts payments sooner but reduces the worker’s monthly benefit compared with waiting until FRA; waiting beyond FRA earns delayed credits through age 70. Compare your own SSA estimates with your cash needs, work plans, health and longevity assumptions, household benefits, and taxes.

What is full retirement age?

FRA is the age at which you qualify for the unreduced primary retirement benefit based on your earnings record. It depends on birth year and is not automatically 65. For people reaching 62 in 2026, FRA is 67; check SSA’s schedule for your birth year.

How much can I lose by claiming Social Security at 62?

The reduction depends on how many months before your FRA you claim. For a person whose FRA is 67, the SSA’s 2026 publication says the reduction at 62 can be as much as 30%. Your personal dollar amount depends on your earnings record, birth date, and claim date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Social Security benefits keep increasing if I wait past 70?

No. For people born in 1943 or later, delayed retirement credits accrue at 8% per year for eligible delay months after FRA, but credits stop at 70. The SSA says there is no additional benefit increase after age 70, even if you continue to delay.

Can I work while receiving Social Security before FRA?

Yes, but the 2026 earnings test may withhold some benefits if earnings exceed the applicable limit. The 2026 limit is $24,480 for someone below FRA all year, with $1 withheld for every $2 over the limit. In the year FRA is reached, the limit is $65,160 for earnings before the FRA month, with $1 withheld for every $3 over that limit. The test ends beginning in the month you reach FRA, and SSA may recalculate benefits for months withheld.

If I delay Social Security, can I also wait to enroll in Medicare?

Not automatically. Medicare eligibility generally begins at 65, separately from Social Security FRA. If you delay Social Security, check whether you need to enroll in Medicare at 65 and confirm the requirements for your situation.

The Bottom Line

Age 62, FRA, and 70 involve different trade-offs between earlier checks and a higher monthly worker benefit. Confirm your FRA, review your earnings record, and compare personalized SSA estimates for different claim ages. Then weigh the timing against work, cash needs, health, household benefits, taxes, and Medicare enrollment. There is no universal claiming age that is right for everyone, and delaying beyond 70 adds no further delayed retirement credits.
