LG.Philips LCD began full-scale production at its LCD-module plant in Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw, Poland, on March 30, 2007. The facility assembled modules mainly for large LCD televisions; it was not a front-end panel fab.
When did production begin?
Full-scale mass production started on March 30, 2007. LG.Philips LCD announced the start on April 1, describing the milestone as occurring nine months after construction began. LG.Philips LCD’s production announcement gives the precise date.
Where was the facility?
The plant was in Kobierzyce, near Wroclaw in southwestern Poland. LG.Philips LCD announced the Wroclaw-area project in September 2005 and signed an investment agreement with the Polish government and Wroclaw municipality two days later. Construction began in June 2006.
What did the Polish plant make?
It was a back-end LCD-module assembly plant, not a facility for fabricating the glass-substrate panels themselves. The 2007 announcement said the operating plant would mainly produce modules for LCD televisions measuring 32 inches and larger. The original 2005 plan also listed modules for 26-, 32-, 37- and 42-inch televisions, as well as monitors of 19 inches and above; those were planned product categories, not proof that each was made at launch. The 2005 project announcement sets out that initial range.

How much was invested, and what capacity was planned?
| Measure | Company figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Planned investment | EUR 429 million | LG.Philips LCD’s 2005 plan for investment through 2011. |
| Initial annual capacity | 3 million modules | Planned in 2005 and cited again at the 2007 production start. |
| Target annual capacity | 11 million units | Planned capacity by 2011; this was a target, not a reported production result. |
The company’s September 2005 announcement described the investment and capacity plans. The 2007 announcement confirmed the initial capacity and the 2011 target; neither figure should be read as evidence of actual annual output.
Why did LG.Philips LCD choose Poland?
The stated aim was to place manufacturing closer to European customers, supporting timely supply and faster technical assistance as the European LCD-TV market grew. The company described a division of work in which technology-intensive front-end panel production remained in Korea while back-end module production and assembly moved closer to customers in Europe. Its June 2006 construction announcement explains that strategy.
