Those are historical averages—not guarantees for a particular route or a forecast of what fares will do next. If your dates are flexible, changing the day you fly may matter more than waiting for a particular day of the week to buy.
How far ahead should you book?
Google’s September 9, 2025 analysis looked at four years of Google Flights data, through August 1, 2025. It measured average round-trip fares for trips lasting 4–16 days and departing from the top 4,000 U.S. markets. The timing results apply to those U.S.-departing trips; they should not be treated as worldwide rules or individual-fare predictions. Google’s 2025 airfare analysis describes the findings.
| Trip type | Lowest average fare timing | Reported low-price range |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic flights | 39 days before departure | 23–51 days before departure |
| International flights | 49 or more days before departure | Not stated by Google |
| Thanksgiving trips | 35 days before departure | 24–59 days before departure |
| Christmas trips | 51 days before departure | 32–73 days before departure |
| Spring-break trips beginning in March or April | 43 days before departure | 28–61 days before departure |
| Summer-vacation trips beginning in July or August | 21 days before departure | 14–43 days before departure |
| Trips to Europe | 48 or more days before departure | Not stated by Google |
| Trips to Mexico or the Caribbean | 50 days before departure | 26–79 days before departure |
Google’s holiday figures covered trips departing before Thanksgiving or Christmas and returning afterward; its spring and summer categories were defined by the month the trip began. A low-price range describes the window in which average prices were low in this dataset, not a promise that a fare will remain available throughout that period.
Does booking on Tuesday save money?
Not much, on average. Tuesday was the cheapest weekday to book in Google’s analysis, but fares were only 1.3% lower than on Sunday, its most expensive booking day. That small historical gap is not a strong reason to delay a purchase or rearrange your schedule just to book on Tuesday.

Which day you fly can matter more
Flights departing Monday through Wednesday averaged about 13% less than weekend departures in the same analysis. If your schedule allows it, compare the actual fares for nearby travel dates: shifting the departure day may produce a more meaningful difference than choosing a different weekday to purchase.
How to use Google Flights to make the decision
- Search your real itinerary first. Enter your route and dates in Google Flights. If Google has enough reliable trend data, the results may show route-specific price notes or timing guidance. Google says these tips use past trends and future fares may not follow them. See Google Flights’ help page.
- Compare dates and airports if you have flexibility. Use the Dates view and Price graph, and check nearby airports. Google notes fares can vary by travel day and airport.
- Track fares if you are considering waiting. Turn on price tracking for your selected dates or flexible dates. Google says it may notify you when prices drop significantly; tracking does not ensure a lower fare will appear.
- Review Best and Cheapest itineraries separately. Best balances price and convenience. Cheapest prioritizes price and can involve longer layovers, self-transfers, airport changes, or separate booking providers. Check the full itinerary, baggage needs, seller, and booking conditions before buying. Google outlines these trade-offs in its Cheapest tab announcement.
Should you take a layover to save?
Google found that taking a layover saved about 22% on average compared with nonstop flights in its analysis. That is an average, not a guaranteed discount for your itinerary. Weigh the fare against extra travel time, connection risk, and any added costs; a cheaper ticket can be a poor deal if the connection or schedule does not work for you.

What Google Flights shows—and what it does not
Google says Flights compares offers from more than 300 travel partners, including airlines, online travel agencies, and aggregators, but its results may not include every available offer. Its help page says partners do not pay to appear in the flight list and partner relationships do not influence list order. Booking-link ranking can still account for factors including offer price, whether the link goes to an airline or an online travel agency, and link quality. Compare the complete booking conditions rather than assuming every displayed option is identical.
Google announced Flight Deals in August 2025 as a beta AI-assisted search tool using real-time Google Flights data. The announcement named the U.S., Canada, and India as initial rollout markets; check availability rather than assuming the beta is currently offered everywhere. Details are in Google’s Flight Deals announcement.

A practical rule for buying
- Fixed domestic dates: Use 39 days out as a historical reference point, with Google’s 23–51-day low-price range as context—not a deadline.
- Fixed international dates: Start checking well ahead; Google found the lowest average prices 49 or more days before departure.
- Holiday or seasonal travel: Use the matching category in the table rather than assuming the general domestic average applies.
- Flexible schedule: Compare weekday departures and alternate dates before focusing on the weekday you buy.
- Considering a wait: Compare the current fare and itinerary with route-specific price notes, and track the fare if useful. A broad historical average cannot say whether your particular ticket will rise or fall.
