When Did Sanyo Buy Fisher? The Two-Stage Acquisition Explained

Sanyo’s purchase of Fisher Radio was staged: a 50% interest was reported by 1976, followed by full ownership in 1977. The final purchase price was undisclosed.

Sanyo acquired Fisher Radio from Emerson Electric in two stages: it held a reported 50% stake by October 1976, then bought Emerson’s remaining 50% in 1977 and became Fisher’s full owner. The contemporary report did not disclose the price. This timeline explains why some later accounts give different years for the acquisition.

When did Sanyo buy Fisher?

The answer depends on whether “buy” means acquiring an initial stake or taking full ownership. Television Digest reported in October 1976 that Sanyo had acquired a 50% interest in Fisher Radio from Emerson Electric. In August 1977, the trade publication reported that Sanyo bought Emerson’s remaining 50% for cash, becoming Fisher’s full owner.

The 1977 report did not state the amount paid. It establishes the final transfer, but not a transaction valuation.

Why do accounts give different years?

The dates can be reconciled by distinguishing the initial stake from the later purchase of the balance. Some histories describe Sanyo’s acquisition as occurring in 1975, while a retrospective account gives May 1977 for the purchase. The contemporary reports establish a 50% interest by October 1976 and full ownership in 1977; they do not establish the exact closing date of the initial 50% transaction. It is therefore more precise to say that Sanyo’s purchase was staged, rather than claim that 1975 was the date it became Fisher’s full owner.

What happened to Fisher after the sale?

Fisher was an audio-equipment maker. A retrospective account says founder Avery Fisher remained a consultant after the sale to Sanyo. A 1987 appellate opinion says Howard Ladd became Fisher’s president in 1976 and describes Fisher as owned by the same Japanese interests that owned Sanyo. These later details provide context, but the available accounts do not set out a detailed post-acquisition integration plan or a named participant’s explanation of the deal’s strategic rationale.
