Newark did not switch to element14 in a single, universally dated rename. The name appeared in several stages: the company later said Newark was rebranded as Newark element14 in 2008; element14 launched as an engineering community in June 2009; a CEO letter dates the Asia Pacific transition to 2010; and industry coverage reports Newark’s North American rebrand in May 2011. In 2019, the visible name returned to Newark, An Avnet Company.
Why sources give different dates for Newark becoming element14
The dates describe different parts of a broader brand transition, not necessarily competing accounts of one event. Newark was a North American electronic-components distributor; element14 also became the name of an online resource and community for design engineers. The parent company’s retrospective history, a community launch announcement, a regional transition letter and industry reporting each record a different milestone.

For the company’s stated rebranding year, use 2008. For the launch of the engineering community, use June 2009. For the Asia Pacific transition, use 2010; for the reported North American operational rollout, use May 2011. The available accounts do not set out exact switch dates for every territory.
What element14 was when it launched
Newark’s June 1, 2009 announcement introduced element14 as an online technology resource and community for electronic design engineers. It described product data, design tools, technical information and discussion, with participation and collaboration among users as part of the service. Kevin Yapp, Premier Farnell’s Chief Innovation Officer, called it “a very much needed one-stop resource for electronic design engineers.”

The release also said Newark then offered products from more than 440 manufacturers with same-day shipping. That was Newark’s company claim in 2009, not a current manufacturer count or shipping guarantee. Separately, the 2019 brand announcement said the element14 community had more than 600,000 members at that time. That is a company-reported 2019 figure, not a current membership count or an independently audited statistic.
How the rebrand related to the distributor
The element14 identity was intended to connect the distribution businesses and the global engineering community under one name. In a CEO letter, the company described element14 as the planned single name for those businesses and the community, while promising continuity in local service during the transition. That broader aim helps explain why the community launch and the distributor’s regional rebranding have different dates.

What happened to Newark Electronics after the element14 period?
Newark was established in the 1930s, according to its 2019 announcement. Newark and Farnell became part of Premier Farnell following the formation of the combined company in 1996. Avnet acquired Premier Farnell in 2016. On March 1, 2019, Farnell element14 became Farnell, An Avnet Company, and Newark element14 became Newark, An Avnet Company.
Avnet said the change was meant to make the connection with Avnet clearer and offer customers and suppliers a more cohesive proposition. It also restored the familiar Newark and Farnell names, which the company said customers had known for decades. Thus, Newark did not disappear: the business returned to Newark as its visible name, endorsed by its parent company.
