Why did the owners close the store?
Joanna and Jim Brown said they were moving into semi-retirement. They had hoped Dymocks or another owner would take over the business, Joanna Brown told PerthNow, but arranging a sale or transfer proved too difficult.
Brown also cited stagnant sales as more customers shifted to online shopping. She said physical bookstores struggled to compete with online sellers and department stores such as Big W. This was the owners’ explanation for their decision, not an independently established assessment of bookstore sales across the industry.

What the bookstore meant to the community
The Browns thanked customers for their support and described being part of Joondalup as a privilege. PerthNow reported that customers left messages of gratitude and well-wishes after the closure announcement; those comments illustrate individual responses, not a representative survey.
The store had hosted author events and built connections with local schools and the City of Joondalup and Wanneroo libraries. Joanna Brown recalled that nearly 1,000 people attended a Jimmy Barnes event at the store. She also remembered copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows selling out before release, with queues forming on release day.
