Disney’s combined streaming businesses first reported positive operating income in fiscal Q3 2024, the quarter ended June 29, 2024. The company announced the milestone on August 7, 2024, a quarter earlier than it had expected. The measure included Disney+ and Hulu through Entertainment Direct-to-Consumer (DTC), plus ESPN+ through Sports; Disney classifies the combined measure as non-GAAP, so it was not a GAAP net-profit milestone.
When Disney’s combined streaming businesses first became profitable
Disney reported the first positive result for its combined streaming businesses in Q3 of fiscal 2024. The quarter ended June 29, 2024, and Disney announced the result on August 7. The company had previously expected the combined group to reach profitability in Q4 FY2024, so the milestone arrived one quarter ahead of that expectation. Disney’s Q3 FY2024 earnings release describes the result and its scope.
CEO Robert A. Iger said the company had “achieved profitability across our combined streaming businesses for the first time and a quarter ahead of our previous guidance.” This is Disney’s description of an operating-income result, not a claim that every streaming service or subscriber group was profitable.
Why the earlier Disney+ and Hulu result was different
The timing can seem confusing because Disney’s Entertainment DTC business—which includes Disney+ and Hulu—had already become profitable in Q2 FY2024. But the broader combined streaming measure also included ESPN+, reported in the Sports segment. That wider group still posted an $18 million operating loss in Q2, according to Disney’s Q2 FY2024 earnings release. The Q3 result was the first positive quarter for the combined group, not the first profitable quarter for Entertainment DTC alone.

Disney streaming results after the milestone
The subsequent reported figures show continued positive results, but the reporting scope should stay attached to each number:

Disney reported the Q4 FY2024 combined result in its Q4 FY2024 earnings release. The Q1 FY2025 figure is from the narrower DTC line item in the SEC filing for the quarter ended December 28, 2024; it should not be treated as the combined measure that also adds ESPN+.

What “turned a profit” means here
Disney’s combined DTC streaming operating-income measure is expressly identified as non-GAAP. It combines businesses reported in different segments, and it is not the same as Disney’s GAAP net income. The milestone therefore supports a specific conclusion: Disney said the selected combination of its streaming businesses generated positive operating income for the first time in Q3 FY2024 under its non-GAAP measure.
