The outlook is active but uneven: capacity and investment forecasts point to continued expansion, while they do not establish how much SiC or GaN manufacturers will sell, or whether individual companies will be profitable. Publicly accessible evidence does not support one reliable, comparable global market-size figure.
What counts as a wide-bandgap semiconductor?
In this power-industry context, the two central materials are SiC and GaN. Their electrical properties can support higher-voltage operation, higher switching frequencies, and improved energy efficiency in suitable power-conversion designs. Those are potential device- and system-level advantages, not a guarantee that every design benefits or that either material universally replaces silicon.
The products are not interchangeable simply because both use wide-bandgap materials. SiC product families include Schottky diodes, MOSFETs, and power modules; GaN suppliers offer power integrated circuits, among other device types. Comparing companies or technologies therefore requires attention to the device, application, and system requirements—not just the material label. Wolfspeed’s FY2026 annual report describes its SiC product families, while Navitas’s FY2025 annual report describes GaN power ICs and SiC devices.
Where are SiC and GaN used?
Company filings and industry reporting identify applications where power conversion, voltage handling, efficiency, or power density matter. These are areas of use and potential demand, not proof that every supplier will grow at the same rate.

SEMI’s September 2026 Power & Compound Fab Report describes electrification, energy infrastructure, renewable energy, industrial automation, telecommunications, and EVs as structural demand drivers, and says SiC and GaN are gaining traction in high-voltage and high-frequency environments.
What do the latest industry figures actually show?
SEMI’s 2026 outlook points to investment and capacity activity across the broader power and compound semiconductor categories. Those categories are wider than SiC and GaN alone, so the figures should not be read as WBG revenue or as a forecast for any one supplier.

| Indicator | Reported figure | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity outlook | SEMI forecasts 6% growth in both 2026 and 2027. | Power and compound semiconductor capacity, not WBG device revenue. |
| Fabs and production lines | SEMI identifies 1,091 worldwide across 2018–2029. | Includes R&D facilities, planned projects, and closed facilities. SEMI says 51 fabs or lines, including epitaxy facilities, are scheduled to begin operations in 2026 and beyond. |
| Fab-equipment spending | SEMI estimates nearly US$29 billion in 2026 and US$32 billion in 2027. | Power and compound semiconductor fabs; SEMI forecasts a rebound after a near-term decline. This is not SiC/GaN revenue. |
| UK semiconductor-sector companies | The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) identified 703 companies in its 2026 study: 295 dedicated and 408 diversified. | The study’s UK semiconductor-sector scope, not a global count of WBG companies. It reports that 89% of its identified companies were SMEs. |
| SiC production milestone | Fuji Electric says it began full-scale mass production of 6-inch SiC devices in December 2024. | A company-specific production milestone. Fuji Electric also describes plans to expand capacity and develop an 8-inch pilot line; those plans are not the same as completed capacity. |
The figures describe different things: capacity, facilities, equipment investment, a national company cohort, and one manufacturer’s production milestone. They are useful indicators of industry activity, but they cannot be added together to create a market estimate or treated as evidence of realized demand, revenue, or profitability.
Why is there no single dependable market-size figure here?
The accessible public material does not establish one independently comparable worldwide value for the SiC-and-GaN power-device market. Market estimates can use different boundaries—device revenue, materials, production capacity, or broader power-semiconductor sales—and may include different device types or applications. Combining figures with mismatched definitions can produce a number that looks precise but does not measure a consistent market.

Omdia lists a 2025 SiC/GaN power-semiconductor report with 2024 as its base year, historical data for 2022–2023, and forecasts for 2025–2029. It also lists a 2026 SiC tracker covering five device types and 17 application sectors, with data from 2023 through 2034. The detailed figures for these subscription products are not stated in their public descriptions. A specific market-size claim should therefore be tied to the actual report table and should say exactly what it measures.
How do suppliers make and source these products?
The supply chain spans material and wafer supply, epitaxy, device design and fabrication, packaging, and integration into power systems. Companies can take different roles in that chain, which affects their exposure to manufacturing capacity, yields, and partner execution.

- BLE, Thread, and Zigbee applications using the nRF52833 SoC
- Wireless Connectivity: Supports multiple protocols including Bluetooth

Fabless design and manufacturing partners
Navitas describes itself as a fabless design house that contracts chip and package manufacturing to partners. Its FY2025 annual report says its results depend in part on those partners’ capacity, cost structure, yield, and execution. That model avoids operating the full manufacturing process in-house but makes partner performance and availability important risks.
In-house production and capacity plans
Fuji Electric reports in-house SiC front-end production and its December 2024 start of full-scale 6-inch production at its Tsugaru facility. It has also described plans to expand capacity and develop an 8-inch pilot line. These are company-specific disclosures; a planned expansion or pilot line should not be treated as production already achieved across the industry.

What do policy and geopolitics add to the picture?
The UK DSIT’s 2026 study identifies greater public support for semiconductors, investment in compound-semiconductor capacity, and geopolitical risk as themes in its review of UK strategy. It notes that Octric is rebuilding GaN capability with some public finance. These examples describe developments in the UK, not a global policy picture.
The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission’s 2025 report discusses China’s wide-bandgap ambitions, state support, competition in upstream materials, and gallium-related export controls. It also repeats historical Wolfspeed share figures—62% for 2021 and 33% for 2023—attributed to sources cited by the commission. Those are secondary-reported historical figures, not current market-share data; they should not be used to rank today’s suppliers.
How should a reader assess the industry’s outlook?
For a finance-minded reader, the key distinction is between evidence of investment and evidence of commercial results. A capacity forecast or announced fab project can signal expectations and strategic commitment, but it does not show that the resulting output will be utilized, sold at attractive prices, or generate a return. The available disclosures here support a view of an industry with multiple applications and active capacity plans—not a uniform growth story.
- Check the market definition: Establish whether a figure covers SiC or GaN power devices, all compound semiconductors, materials, fab capacity, or a wider semiconductor category.
- Separate plans from operating output: Distinguish completed production milestones from future capacity targets, pilot lines, and projects scheduled to start.
- Understand the supplier model: A fabless company’s manufacturing-partner exposure differs from a producer reporting in-house fabrication and investment.
- Look at application and device fit: Demand for an EV module, a server power supply, or a solar inverter does not automatically translate into demand for every WBG device.
- Keep geography and date attached to evidence: UK company counts and policy examples are UK-specific; historical market-share figures are not present-day measures.
SEMI’s positive capacity outlook is a relevant industry signal, but it covers broader power and compound semiconductor categories. It should be considered alongside each company’s product mix, manufacturing arrangements, end-market exposure, and evidence of actual production and sales—not as a stand-alone measure of the financial health of the WBG sector.
