What’s Next for Hawaiian Airlines’ A321neos? Alaska’s Reported “More or None” View

A reported Alaska CFO remark raised a scale-or-exit question for Hawaiian’s A321neos, but no official disposition has been announced. The separate 737-800 plan replaces retiring 717s on Neighbor Island routes.

Hawaiian’s Airbus A321neos have no announced future disposition in the official materials cited here. Beat of Hawaii reported in January 2026 that Alaska CFO Shane Tackett described the fleet as too small to sustain long term, saying it would need to “double that number or zero.” That is secondary reporting—not an official announcement that Alaska will expand, retire or sell the aircraft.

A separate plan is confirmed: Alaska says Hawaiian-branded Boeing 737-800s will replace Hawaiian’s retiring 717s on Neighbor Island routes, with the transition targeted to begin in 2028. That plan concerns interisland flying and does not establish that 737s will replace A321neos.

What Alaska reportedly said about Hawaiian’s A321neos

Beat of Hawaii attributed the “double that number or zero” formulation to Alaska Air Group CFO Shane Tackett in a January 7, 2026 article. The report characterized Hawaiian’s A321neo fleet as “too few” to sustain over the long term. The article also reported that Hawaiian had 18 A321neos, but that count has not been verified against an official current fleet inventory.

The distinction matters: the reported remarks describe a scale-or-exit view, not a documented decision. Alaska’s official materials cited here do not confirm the exact quotation or announce an A321neo expansion, retirement or sale. The aircraft’s future remains unresolved in these sources. Does the 737-800 plan mean A321neos are being replaced?

No such conclusion follows from the announcement. On July 21, 2026, Alaska said Hawaiian-branded Boeing 737-800s would replace the retiring Boeing 717 fleet for Neighbor Island service. The company’s goal is to begin that transition in 2028; it said further details would come as planning continues. The announcement addresses the 717 replacement, not the future of Hawaiian’s A321neos.

Before that transition, Alaska planned to supplement 717 service with one Alaska-branded 737, operating three daily round trips between Honolulu and Kahului beginning in October 2026. That is a separate, planned interim service—not an A321neo replacement announcement. Alaska’s announcement

Why Alaska chose 737-800s for Neighbor Island flying

Alaska says Neighbor Island routes involve short segments, frequent daily cycles and salt-air operating conditions. It describes the 737-800 as a proven aircraft suited to those demands, and says the choice will support capacity, reliable operations and frequent departures. Those are the company’s stated reasons for the 717 replacement; they do not establish that the 737-800 is intended to take over A321neo routes.

Alaska says the future Hawaiian-branded 737-800 fleet will be based in Honolulu and, after integration is complete, flown and crewed by Honolulu-based pilots and flight attendants. It also plans to maintain maintenance capability in Honolulu. Announced cabin plans include twice as many First Class seats, more than 30 Premium Class seats, Starlink Wi-Fi, reclining Recaro seats, 110V and USB power, device holders and additional cargo room for surfboards. These are company plans and specifications, not independently assessed results.

What the company’s fleet and brand strategy tells us

Alaska Air Group’s 2025 Form 10-K lists Boeing 737, 787 and 717 aircraft, Airbus A330 aircraft and Airbus A321neo aircraft among the aircraft operated by Alaska and Hawaiian. The filing also says the airlines received a single FAA operating certificate in October 2025 while Hawaiian remained a distinct guest-facing brand. It does not provide a real-time tail-by-tail count or settle the A321neo fleet’s future.

At its 2026 Investor Day, Alaska Air Group identified growing the Hawaiian brand “to, from and within the islands” as a strategic priority and presented fleet productivity as part of its multiyear plan. That is useful context for the company’s direction, but it is not a commitment to keep, grow or eliminate Hawaiian’s A321neo fleet. What remains uncertain

  • Whether Alaska will retain Hawaiian’s A321neos, add more, or retire or sell them.
  • Whether the “double that number or zero” wording is an exact quotation; it is attributed to Tackett by Beat of Hawaii and is not independently confirmed in the official materials cited here.
  • The verified current number of Hawaiian A321neos. The figure of 18 appears in the secondary report, not an official current fleet inventory.
