The latest official spending figures show modest real growth in household expenditure in April to June 2026, led by clothing and footwear, restaurants and hotels, and housing. Retail footfall rose month on month in May but was slightly below a year earlier. Google’s live trends, meanwhile, show surges in search attention—not necessarily lasting consumer demand.
What the latest UK spending data says
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates that inflation-adjusted household spending grew 0.3% in April to June 2026 compared with the previous quarter, and 1.2% compared with April to June 2025. The figures are from its Consumer trends, UK: April to June 2026, released on 30 September 2026.
Clothing and footwear, restaurants and hotels, and housing were the largest contributors to quarterly household-spending growth. That identifies broad spending categories, not the most popular clothing item, restaurant, hotel or home product. Nor does it establish that these are the UK’s hottest cultural trends overall.
Retail visits tell a different story
ONS’s real-time indicators bulletin published on 18 June 2026 reported that estimated UK retail footfall in May was 9% higher than in April, but 1% lower than in May 2025. The estimate uses BT Active Intelligence data. The bulletin notes that the series is not seasonally adjusted and that calendar variation affects month-to-month comparisons. The two comparisons therefore answer different questions: visits increased from the preceding month, while remaining slightly below the same month a year earlier.

Footfall measures estimated visits to retail areas; it does not directly measure purchases, spending per visitor or interest in any particular product. The figures appear in the ONS real-time indicators bulletin for 18 June 2026.
How to use Google’s live trend list
Google Trends’ Trending Now view highlights queries experiencing a recent surge in search interest. Google says related queries may be grouped and that the list refreshes on average every ten minutes. It can help answer what people are searching for at a particular moment, but a spike may reflect breaking news or entertainment and can fade quickly; it is not proof of sustained interest or purchasing demand.

Because the live list changes, any specific query should be reported with the date and time it was observed. Google explains how the feature works in Explore the searches that are trending now; the United Kingdom Trending Now page is the live feed.

Spending, retail visits and searches are not interchangeable measures. When you see a claim about a UK trend, check:
Rank #3
- Measure: Is it household expenditure, estimated visits or search attention?
- Time window: Is the comparison with the previous month, the same period last year, or a live snapshot?
- Geography: Does the figure refer to the UK or a narrower area?
- Publisher and method: Who produced the figure, and what data does it use?
- Duration: Does the evidence show sustained change or only a short-lived surge?
For personal-finance decisions, a broad category’s contribution to spending growth is a useful signal to watch, not a recommendation to spend more. It does not tell you whether prices rose, more was bought, or which specific products offer value. A live search spike is even less suitable as a basis for budgeting or buying without additional evidence.
