Boeing reported that planned flight testing was complete and that it was in a documentation phase; the FAA had not announced a 737-10 type-certificate decision in the sources available for this article. Boeing expected certification in 2026 and customer deliveries in 2027, but those remain company forecasts.
What is the 737 MAX 10 certification status?
The clearest distinction is between Boeing’s progress report and the regulator’s decision. On September 16, 2026, Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said, “We’re in close coordination with them (FAA), and I think you’re going to see that certification very soon.” He also said, “We’ve completed all the flight testing. Now we’re just in the documentation phase.” Those are Boeing’s statements and expectation, not an FAA announcement or an approved certification date. Boeing’s September 16 update still described certification as forthcoming.

The FAA grants the relevant approval. The sources available for this article do not include an FAA announcement certifying the 737-10. So the accurate status is: Boeing says it is nearing certification; FAA certification is not established by Boeing’s forecast.
What has Boeing completed, and what remains?
Planned flight testing is complete
On July 28, 2026, Boeing said the 737-10 had completed its final planned certification flight test. The company reported 976 flights, more than 2,060 flight hours, and about 1,040 hours of ground testing. These are Boeing’s program figures, not independent FAA progress measurements. Boeing’s July 28 update reported the milestone.

Technical and safety closeout was still underway
After flight tests, Boeing said it still needed to close development-assurance reviews and system-safety assessments, then submit final deliverables to the FAA for regulatory review. In its July 28 snapshot, Boeing said development-assurance review (DAR) 3 was finished, DAR 4 was 60% complete, and system-safety assessments were 32% complete. These percentages describe Boeing’s reported work at that time; they are not FAA approvals or an FAA assessment of the 737-10.
The FAA decision and delivery are separate milestones
Submitting documentation does not itself certify an aircraft. The remaining sequence Boeing described was technical closeout, final deliverables to the FAA, regulatory review, and an FAA certification decision. Boeing expected certification in 2026 and customer deliveries to begin in 2027. The delivery timing depends on the program reaching the necessary approvals and readiness; it is not proof that certification has been granted.

Why is certification taking so long?
The company’s updates point to closeout of design assurance and safety work, as well as regulatory review, after the flight-test campaign. Boeing has also identified two system changes involved in the certification effort: an engine anti-ice change and an enhanced angle-of-attack system. The sources describe these as part of the work but do not establish that either item alone explains the overall schedule.

Engine anti-ice change
Boeing said it identified rare conditions that could cause overheating and made an engine anti-ice (EAI) change as part of the certification effort. The description of the conditions and the change comes from Boeing; it should not be read as a regulator’s finding that every associated issue has been closed.

Enhanced angle-of-attack system
Boeing describes its enhanced angle-of-attack (eAoA) system as checking whether sensor behavior is expected, flagging or suppressing faulty data, and reducing confusing or erroneous warnings. Boeing says the changes are intended to become standard on new 737 MAX production, including the 737-7 and 737-10, and to be retrofitted across the in-service fleet. These are Boeing’s descriptions and rollout plans, not a statement that every aircraft has already received the changes. Boeing’s July 16 program update discusses the changes and its approach to the program.
Statutory safety requirements are context, not proof of approval
The U.S. Department of Transportation summarizes Section 501 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 as restricting airworthiness certification and operation of 737 MAX aircraft unless specified safety enhancements are incorporated. Its notice says the FAA established an implementation plan. That statutory context does not by itself show that the FAA has accepted every 737-10 design item or completed its review. The Department of Transportation’s notice summarizes the provision and plan.

Does the 737-7 certification mean the 737-10 is approved?
No. Boeing announced that the FAA certified the related 737-7 in August 2026, but that is a separate variant and a separate approval. Boeing continued to describe the 737-10 as in progress in September. Certification of one MAX variant does not establish certification of another. The 737-10 is the largest MAX-family member; Boeing lists a typical two-class capacity of 185–210 seats and a range of up to 3,100 nautical miles. Those are Boeing specifications, not certification milestones. Boeing’s 737-7 announcement gives the separate milestone and the 737-10 specifications.

Is the Boeing 737 MAX 10 approved to fly?
The available sources do not establish that the FAA has certified the 737-10. Boeing’s report that flight testing is complete and its expectation of certification “very soon” do not authorize passenger service. The relevant distinction is whether the FAA has issued the approval, not whether Boeing has finished a major stage of testing.
