USDA rated most corn and soybean acreage fair to excellent, but statewide soil moisture was mixed and farmers had limited suitable fieldwork days. These statewide weekly estimates describe crop progress and reported condition—not final yields or the situation in every field.
How is the Minnesota corn harvest going?
In its October 5, 2026 report covering the week ending October 4, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) estimated that Minnesota corn was 89% mature, compared with an 85% average for 2021–2025. Harvest was 12% complete, four percentage points below the five-year average of 16%. So corn maturity was ahead of its benchmark, while harvest progress was behind it.
How is the Minnesota soybean harvest going?
Soybean harvest was 25% complete as of October 4, compared with a 51% average for 2021–2025—a 26-percentage-point gap. Leaf drop had reached 94%, slightly above its five-year average of 92%. The figures show that leaf drop was near its usual benchmark while harvest lagged; they do not explain why the difference occurred.
How do corn and soybean condition ratings compare?
USDA NASS rated 60% of Minnesota corn acreage and 58% of soybean acreage good or excellent. These are weekly condition categories, not direct forecasts of yield, crop quality, or total production.

NASS describes its progress and condition figures as estimates based on reporter observations and subjective evaluations. Reporters estimate the share of a crop reaching a given stage, while condition is rated from very poor to excellent. The estimates are reviewed against prior and nearby reports and may be revised in a later release. NASS says estimates are released after 4 p.m. ET on the first business day of the week and are subject to revision the following week. See the USDA NASS Crop Progress report information.
How dry are Minnesota fields?
For the week ending October 4, USDA NASS reported topsoil as 20% very short or short, 63% adequate, and 17% surplus. Subsoil was 32% very short or short, 59% adequate, and 9% surplus. The different topsoil and subsoil distributions matter: the statewide subsoil estimate showed a larger share in the very short or short categories.

Minnesota had 3.4 days suitable for fieldwork that week, up from 2.8 days the previous week. These statewide measures provide context, but they do not identify the weather cause or describe conditions in any particular county.
What about Minnesota sugarbeets and pasture?
Minnesota sugarbeet harvest was 17% complete. The report’s 18% comparison is a 2021–2025 average across four states, not a Minnesota-specific average, so it should not be treated as a direct state benchmark.

Pasture and range condition was reported as 24% very poor or poor, 39% fair, and 24% good or excellent. This is a separate agricultural context measure, not a rating of corn or soybean fields.

The October 5 report is a weekly statewide snapshot for the week ending October 4. It can show how far reported crops had progressed and how their condition was categorized. By itself, it does not establish why harvest was behind, predict final yields or production, determine crop prices or farm income, or capture the outcome on an individual farm. Minnesota NASS says its weekly state report includes weather and crop information, but these figures alone do not provide a county-level weather diagnosis.
