For most restaurant resumes, use Server. It is clear, professional, and gender-neutral. If you want a more descriptive general title, use Food and Beverage Server. Choose a more specific title—such as Banquet Server or Room Service Server—only if it accurately describes the job you did.
Which title should you use?
Match the title to the setting and your actual duties. Occupational title lists in both Canada and the United States include several common server variants, but they do not rank one title as more likely to earn interviews.
| Title | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Server | You provided general table service in a restaurant or similar setting. This is the simplest general alternative to “waitress.” |
| Food and Beverage Server | You want a more descriptive general title for serving food and drinks. It appears among occupational titles in Canada’s OaSIS profile for food and beverage servers. |
| Banquet Server | You served guests at banquets, catered functions, or other events. This title appears in occupational profiles in Canada and the United States. |
| Room Service Server | You delivered food and beverages to hotel guests in their rooms. It is an example title in the US O*NET profile for waiters and waitresses. |
| Cocktail Server | Your role primarily involved serving drinks in a bar or similar venue. Canada’s OaSIS occupational profile includes this kind of specific serving title. |
| Counter Server | You took or served orders at a counter in a quick-service or similar setting. The National Restaurant Association’s restaurant job descriptions include this role. |
Keep your past job title accurate
For a previous job, use the title your employer used when it is clear and accurate. If the official title is unfamiliar, add a truthful equivalent in parentheses: Dining Room Associate (Server). That helps a recruiter understand the work without obscuring the employer’s title.
Indeed’s resume guidance distinguishes a desired title, which signals the role you want, from titles in your experience section, which describe your work history. It recommends using your real job title in the experience section so a recruiter can verify it with a former employer. That is practical resume guidance, not a legal rule. See Indeed’s guidance on resume job titles.
