Costco can be a good place to buy a TV if its price, return window, and warranty support add up for the exact model you want. The key limits: televisions must be returned within 90 days of receipt, and any extended coverage depends on the TV and plan terms. Compare model numbers and total installed cost—not just screen size, resolution, or a sale price.
Start with your room, viewing distance, and full budget
Measure before comparing TVs. A screen’s diagonal size does not tell you whether the set will fit your console, doorway, or route into the room.
- Measure your usual viewing distance and the available wall or furniture width.
- Check the TV’s width, height, depth, weight, stand dimensions, and VESA mount pattern on the product listing or manual.
- Measure doorways, stairs, elevators, and other parts of the delivery path. For a large TV, check the boxed dimensions as well as the panel dimensions.
- Check the planned mounting height and viewing angle. Make sure a soundbar or center speaker will not block the lower edge of the screen.
Costco comparison listings may include dimensions, weight, stand details, and VESA information. For example, the TCL QM6K Pro comparison listing includes a VESA pattern. Verify the details for the specific size and model you plan to order; they can differ within a product family.
Set a total budget that includes the TV, membership if you do not already have one, tax, delivery, any room-of-choice or setup service, wall mount and installation, audio equipment, cables, and haul-away if needed. Costco’s selection may be narrower than a specialist retailer’s, and online inventory, warehouse stock, delivery options, and prices can vary by location and channel. Do not assume a listed delivery service includes wall mounting or disposal; check the exact listing and ZIP-code eligibility.

Choose display technology for how you watch
OLED, QLED, and Mini-LED describe different aspects of a TV’s design. “QLED” and “Mini-LED” do not guarantee a particular picture quality: the panel, backlight, local dimming, processing, and viewing conditions all matter.
| Technology | Often suits | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| OLED | Dark-room movies, deep blacks, contrast, wide viewing angles, and fast-response gaming | Price and brightness behavior compared with LCD models. Repeated, prolonged static images can raise image-retention or burn-in concerns; that is a risk, not an inevitable outcome. |
| QLED LCD | Bright rooms, daytime viewing, sports, and strong color without necessarily paying OLED prices | QLED generally means an LCD panel with quantum-dot color technology and a backlight. Black levels, blooming, viewing angles, and gaming capability depend on the particular TV and its backlight and dimming system. |
| Mini-LED LCD | Bright rooms, HDR, sports, animation, and general-purpose family rooms | Mini-LED is a backlight technology, not OLED. Local dimming can create blooming around bright objects or subtitles; results depend on the zones, panel, processing, and viewing angle. |
Costco’s TV technology guide explains the basic distinction between OLED’s self-emissive pixels and LCD designs that use a backlight. Consumer Reports notes that local dimming and Mini-LED have narrowed the performance gap with OLED, but the label alone does not establish how a particular model performs. For comparisons of picture quality and motion, see its TV buying guide.
If you keep news tickers, a desktop interface, or a game HUD on screen for long periods, factor that use into an OLED decision. Conversely, a bright-room buyer should not assume every QLED or Mini-LED set will handle reflections, dark scenes, or off-angle seating equally well.
Compare the exact model number, not the brand name
Retailer-specific model numbers or configurations can make apparently similar TVs difficult to compare. Before checkout, record the full model number, screen size, model year, and suffix letters, then check the product page and manufacturer’s specifications for these details:

Costco comparison pages can expose meaningful differences within a range. Its TCL 55-inch QM6K Pro listing, for example, identifies a 144 Hz native refresh rate and display and HDR features. The 85-inch QM6K Pro listing provides its own port and VESA details. Check the page for the precise size you are buying rather than carrying specifications over from a related model.

Know which picture and gaming specifications matter
4K is a starting point, not a picture-quality guarantee
4K UHD normally means 3840 × 2160 pixels, but resolution alone says little about HDR impact, color accuracy, black levels, motion, viewing angles, or upscaling. Consider the quality of the dimming or OLED panel, brightness, processing, and the content you actually watch. If you use cable, broadcast TV, DVDs, or older streams, upscaling matters too. A 4K label does not guarantee that a TV will render those sources well.
Separate native refresh rate from motion branding
Native refresh rate is the panel’s actual refresh capability. Manufacturer motion-rate names can describe processing or marketing figures rather than the native rate. The frame rate of the source—such as a console, PC, broadcast, or streaming service—is another separate factor. Consumer Reports explains refresh rate and motion in its TV buying guide.
For sports or gaming, verify the native refresh rate you need, whether the TV supports 4K at 120 Hz or 144 Hz, and its VRR range. Check which HDMI ports support the complete feature set; a television can have several HDMI inputs without every input supporting the same capabilities.

Check HDMI features port by port
HDMI 2.1 features are most relevant if you use a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, suitable gaming PC, 4K/120 Hz source, or advanced sound system. Look for the specific features you need: 4K120, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), and enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC). The HDMI specification overview describes those features and Ultra High Speed HDMI cables capable of 48 Gbps. Do not infer that every port on a TV supports all of them from the words “HDMI 2.1”; check the manual or manufacturer’s port specifications and plan your console, PC, and receiver connections before mounting.
Include sound and software in the comparison
Built-in speakers may be adequate for casual viewing but can fall short for films or a large room. If you plan to use a soundbar or receiver, check for eARC if you need it, Dolby Atmos passthrough if your system supports it, and optical output if your existing equipment requires one. Confirm whether the source should connect to the TV or the audio system for the format you want. Include the cost of separate audio in your budget.

Also check the smart-TV platform—such as Google TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, or Roku—for the apps you use, account or voice-assistant requirements, and advertising or automatic content-recognition settings. If you prefer another interface, confirm that an external streaming device will work for you. Do not assume a particular number of years of software updates unless the manufacturer states it for that exact model.
Costco’s TV return window is 90 days
Costco lists televisions among electronics that must be returned within 90 days. The period starts when the member receives the merchandise, not when it is ordered. The general satisfaction guarantee does not remove this electronics exception. See Costco’s return policy and its warehouse-return instructions for the current process. Costco says a receipt or original packaging can help, though packaging or receipt may not always be necessary for a warehouse return.
Use the return window as a testing period, not a reason to postpone setup. Record the delivery date and set a reminder well before day 90. If you need to return the TV, follow Costco’s current instructions and contact the retailer promptly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the warranty layers before paying for extra coverage
Costco says qualifying televisions receive an extension of the manufacturer’s warranty through Costco Technical and Warranty Services for up to two years from the warehouse purchase date or online delivery date. The manufacturer’s warranty, eligibility, and exclusions still matter; check the terms for the exact TV on Costco’s extended-warranty page.
Costco gives an example in which an eligible Allstate plan follows two years of Costco Technical and Warranty Services coverage with three years through Allstate—for up to five years of stated coverage in total. That is not a universal bundle. Confirm on your receipt or order whether the plan is included or was purchased, and read its terms rather than assuming the same coverage applies to every TV.

The Costco Allstate plan listing says the plan must be purchased within 90 days of buying the TV at Costco and that coverage begins when the member receives the covered item. It describes protection against mechanical and electrical failures during normal use, parts and labor coverage, and no deductibles or hidden fees. It excludes physical damage, intentional damage, loss, and theft. It protects one item. These terms do not make it accidental-damage insurance, and the remedy for a specific claim depends on the contract and claim decision.
Do not buy an extra plan automatically. Consider the TV’s price, the manufacturer’s coverage, how long you expect to keep it, and the plan’s exclusions. A cracked screen from moving or mounting the TV is different from a covered mechanical or electrical failure under the listed terms. If you buy a plan, keep the Costco receipt or online order record, model and serial number, plan confirmation, and claim correspondence. Costco says online plan purchases can be found under Orders & Purchases; warehouse purchases are under the In-Warehouse tab in its Allstate FAQ.
Inspect and test the TV as soon as it arrives
Complete these checks early enough to address a problem within the return period. For a damaged delivery, photograph the box and labels before opening, report the issue promptly, and avoid mounting the set or discarding packaging while you decide how to proceed.
- Photograph the box and shipping labels before opening it.
- Inspect the panel for cracks, pressure marks, and frame damage; confirm the model number matches your order.
- Check that the stand, screws, remote, power cable, and listed documentation are present.
- Set up the TV and test the remote, Wi-Fi, streaming apps, speakers, and Bluetooth if you use it.
- Connect every source you need and test each intended HDMI port. For gaming, confirm the desired resolution, refresh rate, VRR, and low-latency mode.
- View familiar content and look for dead pixels, tint, banding, dirty-screen effect, blooming, and uniformity problems. Use your own viewing conditions; a warehouse demo can use different lighting, content, and picture settings.
- Test the sound system and confirm the audio connection and passthrough settings you need, including eARC if applicable.
- Keep the packaging until the TV has passed your inspection and you are confident you will keep it.
If the TV fails after the 90-day return period, a merchandise return and a warranty claim are separate processes. Contact Costco Technical and Warranty Services about the coverage that applies rather than treating it as a regular return.
Decide whether Costco is the right retailer for you
Costco’s total value can be strong when the exact TV fits your needs, the price compares well with other sellers, and the return and coverage terms matter to you. Membership is required, and Costco is not necessarily the best fit for every buyer or every model. Compare the model year and specifications, not just the retailer’s sale badge: prices can fall as models age and stores clear inventory for newer sets, as Consumer Reports notes in its TV buying guide.
- Costco may fit well if you already have a membership, want a large TV, value the 90-day return period, and find the exact model and delivery package competitive.
- Compare other retailers if you need a wider selection of specialist models, specific expert services, or a configuration Costco does not carry.
- Slow down before checkout if you have not confirmed the full model number, gaming-port capabilities, delivery path, installed cost, or whether a protection plan is actually included.
Treat warehouse and online prices as channel- and location-specific. If a price changes after purchase, check Costco’s current price-adjustment terms for your product, purchase channel, and promotion rather than assuming an adjustment applies.
