The NIO EP9 is a two-seat, track-focused electric sports car built around four electric motors. NIO’s published figures include 1 megawatt of power, a 313 kph top speed and a 0–200 kph time of 7.1 seconds. But the often-repeated $3 million price is not confirmed by the official NIO material reviewed here: a 2017 Nürburgring series report gave a lower figure of $1.48 million, without establishing an official NIO list price.
What is the NIO EP9?
The EP9 is a high-performance electric sports car developed by Chinese automaker NIO. NIO describes it as a two-seat car with four inboard electric motors and four individual gearboxes. The company’s investor filing says the project served its brand-building efforts, so the EP9 is best understood as a technology and performance showcase—not as evidence of a regular consumer-car lineup.
NIO’s official EP9 page and investor filing provide the car’s headline specifications. These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent test results.
What do you get for the reported price?
The EP9’s appeal is its unusual electric drivetrain and track-focused performance, rather than a conventional list of luxury-car amenities. NIO’s published technical details include:
#1 Best Overall
- TOY CAR FOR KIDS – Young electric car enthusiasts can race into the future with the LEGO City EV Supercar (60486) building toy for kids ages 5 years old and up

- 1 MW of power, which NIO also expresses as 1,360 PS. Its 2017 announcement separately gives 1,342 bhp; PS and bhp are different units, so 1,360 PS should not be described as 1,360 bhp.
- 313 kph (194 mph) maximum speed, according to NIO.
- 0–200 kph in 7.1 seconds, according to NIO.
- 24,000 N of downforce, a figure advertised on NIO’s product page. The page does not establish the conditions or speed at which that figure applies.
- An interchangeable battery design intended to charge in 45 minutes, as described in NIO’s investor filing. That is a historical design statement, not confirmation of a currently available charging service.
These specifications describe the EP9’s engineering ambition. They do not establish a consumer-ready road configuration, current sales channel or present-day availability.
What is known about the $3 million price?
The $3 million figure in the car’s popular description is not substantiated by the official NIO sources cited here. A May 17, 2017 report by the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie called the EP9 a limited edition and stated a price of $1.48 million. That is secondary reporting, not a verified NIO list price, and it does not establish a current market value or an actual transaction price.

How fast was the EP9 at the Nürburgring?
NIO announced that the EP9 completed the 20.8 km Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:45.900 on May 12, 2017. The company said that was 19.22 seconds quicker than its earlier EP9 time of 7:05.12, set in October 2016. These are historic results as reported by NIO; the sources cited here do not establish that the EP9 currently holds a record.

What were its autonomous and driver-operated COTA laps?
NIO reported two distinct Circuit of the Americas results in 2017. On February 23, the EP9 completed an autonomous lap in 2:40.33, at speeds up to 160 mph. NIO separately reported a driver-operated lap of 2:11.30 at 170 mph. The driver-operated time is not the autonomous time; comparing them without identifying the mode would be misleading.

Is the NIO EP9 available to buy or legal to drive on public roads?
The cited material does not establish a current sales channel, a currently authorized collectible or a consumer-ready road configuration. It therefore cannot support a claim that an individual buyer can order one today or drive it legally on public roads. NIO’s later retrospective recounts additional track events, including Goodwood in 2018 and Zhejiang International Circuit in 2021, and says the car took part in more than 20 track events over six years. That event count is NIO’s retrospective account, not an independently audited tally.
