Apple and Google have confirmed a multi-year collaboration to use Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology in Apple’s next-generation foundation models. The intended result is a more capable Siri and additional Apple Intelligence features—but this does not mean the Google Gemini app is replacing Siri, nor has Apple confirmed the widely reported $1 billion annual price.
What Apple and Google actually announced
In their joint statement, Apple and Google described the arrangement as a multi-year collaboration. Google said Apple’s next-generation foundation models would be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology.
Apple later said its next-generation Apple Foundation Models were being built in collaboration with Google and Gemini. Apple presents the resulting features as part of Apple Intelligence, not as a Google consumer product.
A more capable Siri is a central use case. Apple says the upgraded assistant will better understand personal context, maintain conversational continuity, and perform actions across apps and Apple devices. Those are announced capabilities, however—not independent proof that the finished system will outperform Gemini, ChatGPT, or other assistants in everyday use.

What the deal does not mean
- Gemini is not replacing Siri as a consumer brand. Users are not being told to use the standalone Gemini app instead of Siri.
- Google is not necessarily controlling the whole assistant. The public announcement concerns underlying model and cloud technology, while Apple retains the user-facing Apple Intelligence experience.
- The partnership is not confirmed to be exclusive. Neither company’s announcement says Apple cannot work with OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, or other providers.
- The reported price is not official. Apple and Google have not publicly disclosed the contract’s financial terms.
How Gemini fits into Apple’s AI stack
The simplest way to understand the arrangement is to separate the visible product from the technology underneath it:

Why Apple may need Google
Apple has ambitious Apple Intelligence plans, but the more advanced Siri experience was delayed. A partnership gives Apple access to mature large-model technology and cloud infrastructure without requiring it to build every large foundation model entirely in-house.
That could help Apple accelerate delivery while preserving control of the iPhone experience. The trade-off is dependence on Google, a direct platform competitor. News coverage has framed the collaboration as a response to Apple’s difficulty delivering its Siri overhaul; that is an interpretation of the situation, not an admission by Apple.

For Google, the arrangement could put Gemini-derived technology inside Apple’s enormous device ecosystem. That potential distribution benefit is a strategic inference, not a publicly stated target or guaranteed commercial outcome.
What Google is providing—and what remains unknown
Known from the announcements
- Model technology: Gemini models will help underpin Apple’s next-generation foundation models.
- Cloud technology: Google cloud technology is part of the collaboration.
- Potential customization: Apple’s wording suggests a collaboration around Apple’s own foundation models rather than simply exposing the standard Gemini consumer service.
Not publicly specified
- The exact Gemini model version or commercial name.
- The hardware and serving architecture used to run it.
- Which requests run on-device, through Apple infrastructure, or through other services.
- How model updates will be handled.
- The contract’s exclusivity, termination provisions, and service commitments.
The $1 billion figure and the reported model size
Bloomberg reported that Apple planned to pay Google approximately $1 billion per year. Bloomberg also reported that Apple intended to use a customized Google model with approximately 1.2 trillion parameters.
Neither figure was included in the official Apple-Google announcement. The careful description is therefore: Bloomberg reported these figures, but Apple and Google have not publicly confirmed them as deal terms.
Parameter count is not a guarantee of quality. User experience also depends on training, post-training, tool access, latency, safety systems, deployment constraints, and Apple’s software integration. A larger model may be more expensive to operate without automatically producing better answers or more reliable actions.

What could change in Siri
Apple says the new Siri is designed to understand more personal context, follow conversations more naturally, and work across apps and Apple devices. In practical terms, that could support requests involving planning, summarization, personal information, and multi-step app actions.
More model intelligence does not automatically grant Siri permission to change accounts, access private information, or complete an action in an app. Those abilities depend on Apple’s permissions, app integrations, authentication requirements, and the final product implementation.
Apple says the new AI capabilities, including the upgraded Siri experience, are scheduled to become available in beta later in 2026, initially for supported devices set to English, with additional languages to follow. The announcement should not be treated as a guarantee of a general release date or uniform performance across devices.
Compatibility: not every iPhone will get it
Apple’s announced compatibility list includes:
- iPhone 16 models and later.
- iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
- iPad mini with A17 Pro.
- iPads with M1 or later.
- Macs with M1 or later.
- Apple Vision Pro.
- Apple Watch Series 9 or later.
- Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later.
- Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby.
Apple lists support through iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27. Compatibility with the platform does not mean every feature will work identically on every listed device. Language, region, account settings, processing requirements, and beta availability may also matter.

For buyers, this means a new device should not be purchased solely because of a promised AI feature. Check Apple’s final compatibility and availability details when the feature launches, and wait for independent testing if Siri performance is the reason for upgrading.
Privacy and data handling
Apple has emphasized on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute as part of its Apple Intelligence privacy approach. However, using Google technology raises legitimate questions about the technical path taken by individual requests.
The public announcements do not establish:
- Whether Google operates any part of the user-facing request path.
- What data is logged or retained.
- Whether requests can be used for model training.
- How operator access is restricted and audited.
- How Apple divides requests between devices, Apple infrastructure, and third-party services.
It would therefore be inaccurate to say that Google will receive every Siri request—or that Google can never see any relevant data. Users should look for Apple’s eventual technical documentation covering retention, encryption, access controls, training restrictions, and request routing.

Apple may use multiple providers for different tasks, regions, or product experiences. The Gemini announcement should not be interpreted as proof that Apple is moving to a single-provider AI strategy.
Will advanced Siri cost extra?
Apple and Google have not published a final price, subscription name, usage quota, or payment policy for Gemini-assisted Siri.
Axios reported that Apple CEO Tim Cook indicated heavy Siri users might eventually have to pay more for advanced AI access. That report does not establish a final price, launch date, usage threshold, or whether ordinary Siri access will remain free.
Consumers should also distinguish the deal’s reported business cost from a consumer subscription. The roughly $1 billion figure attributed to Bloomberg is a reported payment between companies, not a price Apple has announced for users. A Google Gemini subscription should not be assumed to be necessary for Apple’s integrated feature.

The financial and strategic trade-offs
Potential advantages for Apple
- Faster access to advanced model capabilities.
- Less need to build and operate every large model internally.
- A way to improve Siri while keeping the Apple interface and ecosystem.
- Potentially stronger reasoning, summarization, planning, and conversational context.
Risks for Apple
- Dependence on Google for a core product capability.
- Higher or less predictable costs if usage grows rapidly.
- Privacy and compliance questions around third-party technology.
- Inconsistent quality between on-device and cloud-based processing.
- The possibility that a model upgrade still does not make Siri competitive.
- Regulatory scrutiny involving two major platform companies.
Risks for users
- Older devices may be excluded.
- Availability may initially be limited by language or region.
- Beta software may be unreliable or inconsistent.
- Some actions may fail because of permissions, authentication, or app limitations.
- Advanced use could eventually be subject to subscriptions or usage limits.
- Users may not know whether a response came from Apple’s models, Gemini-derived technology, ChatGPT, or another service.
What consumers should do now
- Do not assume your current iPhone qualifies. Check it against Apple’s announced hardware list.
- Do not buy solely on the promise of AI. The upgraded Siri remains scheduled for beta later in 2026 in the cited Apple materials.
- Do not buy a Google Gemini plan just for this feature. The Apple integration and Google’s consumer Gemini products are separate.
- Wait for final pricing. No official advanced-Siri price or usage policy has been published.
- Read the technical privacy details when available. Focus on retention, training use, routing, encryption, and operator access.
- Keep expectations realistic. A more powerful model will not guarantee that every app action works or that every answer is accurate.
Bottom line
Apple is best understood as co-developing or sourcing part of its foundation-model capability from Google while retaining control of Siri, Apple Intelligence, and the operating-system experience. Gemini is likely to be an important underlying technology, not a replacement for the Siri brand or the standalone Gemini app.
The confirmed facts are the multi-year collaboration, Gemini model involvement, Google cloud technology, and the planned use in future Apple Intelligence features. The biggest unresolved questions are the reported $1 billion annual payment, the alleged 1.2-trillion-parameter model, exclusivity, detailed data handling, final availability, and whether advanced Siri will eventually require payment.
