What UQPAY’s Mastercard Principal Membership Means for Merchants

UQPAY’s 2024 Mastercard membership announcement described direct merchant acquiring, with an initial focus on Singapore. Here is what it means and what merchants should still verify.

UQPAY’s July 10, 2024 announcement said Mastercard approved it as a Principal Member for acquiring, allowing UQPAY to acquire merchants directly and connect them to Mastercard’s network. The announcement focused on merchant solutions in Singapore. It was a business-to-business acquiring development—not a new Mastercard product for consumers—and it does not, by itself, establish a merchant’s eligibility, fees, integration choices, or service availability.

What the Mastercard membership means

In its July 10, 2024 announcement, UQPAY said it had been approved as a Mastercard Principal Member for acquiring business. UQPAY described the practical change this way: “As a Principal Member of Mastercard, UQPAY will now be able to directly acquire merchants and provide them with access to Mastercard’s global payment network.”

In acquiring, a provider works with businesses to accept card payments and routes transactions into the relevant card network. UQPAY’s statement describes a direct acquiring relationship with Mastercard, rather than a consumer card launch. The announcement’s initial merchant focus was Singapore; it does not say that every business in every country can sign up.

What UQPAY says merchants may gain

UQPAY presented the membership as a way to offer enhanced payment security, international reach with local support, customized payment solutions, streamlined operations, and expert support. These are qualitative benefits claimed by the company. The announcement does not provide independent measurements of fraud reduction, authorization rates, processing speed, cost savings, or merchant growth attributable to the membership.

What is established about UQPAY’s Singapore status

UQPAY’s current company history lists its Mastercard principal-membership milestone in July 2024. Its licensing and certifications page identifies UQPAY Pte. Ltd. as a Major Payment Institution licensed by Singapore’s Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), and lists merchant acquisition among the licensed services. UQPAY also identifies itself as a Mastercard Principal Member.

Those pages describe the status UQPAY currently represents for its Singapore entity. They are not a substitute for checking which legal entity would contract with a particular merchant, whether the required service is available in that merchant’s market, and what the contract permits.

A March 2024 Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing filing excerpt described UQPAY as providing direct acquiring through card-scheme clearing institutions in Mainland China and Singapore, and as partnering with locally credentialed financial institutions in other jurisdictions. That filing is a historical description, not a current jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction licensing determination.

What the announcement does not tell a merchant

Principal membership alone does not settle the commercial or operational questions a business needs answered before choosing an acquirer. The 2024 announcement does not establish:

The announcement does not benchmark UQPAY against other acquirers on any of these points.

How the later milestones differ

UQPAY’s company history separately lists a Visa principal-membership milestone in October 2024 and a Visa acquiring license in July 2026. Its news listing also reports that it joined Mastercard’s Crypto Partner Program in August 2026. These are separate developments; the Crypto Partner Program is not the same thing as Mastercard acquiring membership.
