On June 7, 2025, President Donald Trump warned Elon Musk that he could face “serious consequences” if he funded Democratic candidates running against Republicans who voted for Trump’s tax-and-spending bill. Trump did not say what those consequences would be.
What did Trump warn Musk about?
In a telephone interview with NBC News, Trump made the warning conditional on Musk funding Democrats who were challenging Republicans that supported the bill. Reuters reported the interview and quoted Trump’s phrase, “serious consequences”; Axios also reported the warning. Reuters, republished by KSL.com, June 7, 2025; Axios, June 8, 2025.
What were the “serious consequences”?
Trump did not specify them. He declined to describe what might happen, so the interview does not establish a particular penalty, investigation, or other action tied to the warning.
How the warning fit into the public dispute
The warning came amid a dispute over Trump’s tax-and-spending legislation. Reuters’ timeline dates Musk’s criticism of the bill to June 3; Musk called it a “disgusting abomination.” Trump expressed disappointment publicly on June 5. In the June 7 interview, Trump said he assumed his relationship with Musk was over and, when asked whether he wanted to repair it, answered, “No.” Reuters timeline, republished by Investing.com, June 11, 2025; Reuters, republished by KSL.com, June 7, 2025.

Why government contracts were mentioned separately
Trump had separately posted on Truth Social that ending Musk’s government subsidies and contracts would be an easy way to save money. That post was not a definition of the “serious consequences” in the June 7 warning. The reporting does not say Trump canceled a contract because of the warning.

Reuters reported that Musk spent nearly $300 million in the 2024 elections. The same report said nonpartisan analysts estimated Trump’s bill would add $2.4 trillion to the $36.2 trillion national debt over 10 years. These figures provide campaign-finance and legislative context; neither identifies a consequence Trump threatened in the interview. Reuters, republished by KSL.com, June 7, 2025.
