“Trade War TikTok” was an April 2025 wave of videos claiming that Chinese factories or direct manufacturers could sell goods resembling luxury-brand products for far less. DHgate, a wholesale marketplace, became part of the conversation as a place viewers might look for those goods. The videos did not establish that the sellers shown supplied luxury brands, and buying through a marketplace did not guarantee lower total costs, reliable quality, or the protections of an established retailer.
What was “Trade War TikTok”?
During the U.S.–China trade tensions of April 2025, TikTok videos featured people presenting themselves as Chinese factory workers or direct manufacturers. They claimed they could provide products similar to luxury-brand goods at much lower prices, and some directed viewers toward DHgate. The Washington Post covered the trend on April 15, 2025, describing both the appeal of direct buying and the risks consumers might face: The Washington Post’s April 15, 2025 report.

That made DHgate a focal point in a broader argument about manufacturing, brand markups and tariffs. It did not make the sellers’ claims about their factories or their relationship to luxury brands verified facts. Cybernews also reported that the videos appeared amid heightened trade tensions, but said there was no concrete evidence linking them to a coordinated Chinese government effort: Cybernews’ coverage.
Do the videos prove luxury brands use the sellers shown?
No. A creator’s assertion that they work in a factory, or that a seller makes goods for a particular luxury label, is not proof of employment, authorization, product origin or a brand’s supply chain. The original posts and named sellers were not comprehensively authenticated, so claims about any specific factory, brand or listing should remain attributed claims unless independently verified.

A 2025 report by France’s NORMA described “Trade War TikTok” as information manipulation involving counterfeiters and characterized videos as coming from people presenting themselves as direct manufacturers of Western luxury brands. That is the report’s assessment of the trend—not independent verification of every creator, seller or brand claim. Read it as an attributed finding, not proof that every video or seller was part of a single operation: NORMA.
Can buying direct reliably save money or avoid import costs?
No. A low listing price is not the same as a low delivered cost, and a claim of factory-direct access does not guarantee savings. In its April 2025 coverage, the Washington Post cautioned that direct buying might not save money and could mean weaker quality control, customer support and protection against scams. Sky Canaves, principal retail and e-commerce analyst at eMarketer, put the caution plainly: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Consider what you can verify before paying, rather than relying on a video’s sourcing story:
- Seller identity and provenance: Can you establish who is selling the item and where it comes from, beyond a creator’s claim?
- Quality control: Is there reliable information about the item’s materials, specifications and consistency?
- Support and remedies: What process applies if the item is counterfeit, defective, never arrives or differs from the listing?
- Import charges: Does the checkout price include applicable duties and fees, or could charges arise later?
These are questions to check, not evidence that a particular DHgate seller has passed them. The trend coverage did not verify individual listings or test DHgate products. Nor should a lookalike claim be treated as evidence that an item is authentic or authorized.

What changed in de minimis policy after the 2025 videos?
The April 2025 trend coverage discussed tariffs under the conditions then reported. Those figures are historical, not current rates. A later White House executive order, dated February 20, 2026, states that duty-free de minimis treatment does not apply to covered shipments regardless of value, country of origin or mode of transportation, with the stated changes effective February 24, 2026. See the February 20, 2026 executive order.
The order describes a change to de minimis treatment; it does not establish the total duty owed on any particular purchase. The amount and who is liable can depend on other applicable rules and the shipment’s circumstances. Check current customs guidance for an item-specific estimate rather than applying a tariff figure quoted in April 2025 or assuming a marketplace purchase is duty-free.
