Tottenham were reportedly prepared to offer Toby Alderweireld about £100,000 a week in April 2017, but that was a proposed new deal—not a confirmed salary. Later reporting that year still put his basic wage at about £50,000 a week and said negotiations had not reached a breakthrough.
What was Alderweireld’s reported wage offer?
The Independent reported on April 28, 2017, that Tottenham were ready to offer the defender around £100,000 per week. It described a prospective contract figure, not a signed agreement or a wage confirmed by the club. The newspaper said the proposed amount would bring Alderweireld level with Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris (The Independent).
How did that compare with his reported existing pay?
The Evening Standard reported in March 2017 that Alderweireld’s existing deal was worth about £50,000 a week and that he wanted terms closer to Tottenham’s top earners. It also reported that Kane and Lloris could earn in excess of £100,000 per week, while noting the club’s position that basic salaries fell within its wage structure (The Evening Standard). Those reports do not provide a complete, like-for-like breakdown of basic pay, bonuses or total compensation.
| When | Reported figure | Status |
|---|---|---|
| March 2017 | About £50,000 per week | Existing wage reported by The Evening Standard |
| April 2017 | Around £100,000 per week | Possible new offer reported by The Independent |
| December 2017 | £50,000 per week basic wage | Later Guardian account; it said negotiations had not reached a breakthrough |
Why the £100,000 figure was not a confirmed new salary
In December 2017, The Guardian reported that Alderweireld’s basic wage remained £50,000 a week and that talks had yet to produce a breakthrough. Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said Alderweireld still had “two-and-a-half years of contract” and urged supporters to trust chairman Daniel Levy (The Guardian). This later account is why the April figure should be described as an offer Tottenham were reportedly prepared to make, rather than an agreed or paid wage.

The Guardian also reported that Alderweireld’s contract included a one-year extension option through 2020 and a £25 million release clause that applied in summer 2019 under specified timing conditions. These were reported historical contract terms, not evidence that the £100,000 offer was accepted.

Later salary databases do not settle the question. FBref labels its 2017–18 figure of £50,000 a week an “Unverified estimation,” while Salary Sport lists £47,000 a week for that season. These differing estimates are not official club disclosures and cannot establish the exact terms of any formal offer (FBref; Salary Sport).
