Tom Wagner said Chris Davies had the board’s “complete and total confidence” in an interview before Birmingham City’s match at Wrexham on 3 October 2025. That is the clearest direct statement located on Davies’ future—but it is not a new October 2026 assurance. Later reports described pressure on the manager, while the club’s official news coverage listed him through 21 September 2026. No newer direct Wagner statement on Davies’ future was established by 8 October 2026.
What Wagner said about Davies
Before Birmingham’s 3 October 2025 match at Wrexham, Wagner told Sky Sports: “Chris has the complete and total confidence of the board, period. Full stop.” The RealEFL and The72 reported the same interview; these are two accounts of one statement, not separate votes of confidence. The RealEFL’s report also quoted Wagner saying: “We are focussed on process, and I’m confident that the process he is pursuing will pay dividends and be competitive. I think the vast majority of people understand that.”
The comments came during a difficult opening stretch of the 2025–26 season, following a defeat at Coventry, a draw with Sheffield Wednesday and a 1–1 draw at Wrexham. Wagner said new players were adjusting to Davies’ football and that adaptation took time. The RealEFL described Birmingham’s preceding League One title-winning campaign as a record-breaking season with 111 points.
What changed in 2026
Davies acknowledged pressure in March
After a defeat at Derby, Davies told BBC Radio WM that pressure had been part of the job from the beginning: “I think when it comes to my position at the club I’ve always felt pressure as such from the very first day I got here.” He added: “So I’m not really thinking too much about that. I think we have a responsibility to finish those seven games strongly regardless of what happens with me.”

In its 23 March 2026 report, the BBC said Birmingham were then five places and 10 points outside the top six, with seven games remaining. Those figures describe the situation at that time, not the October 2026 table. Read the BBC’s report on Davies’ comments.
July and September reports cited unnamed sources
On 11 July 2026, Football Insider reported, citing unnamed sources, that Davies had six to eight matches to reach a top-six target. On 11 September, TEAMtalk reported that the next two games could be crucial and that intermediaries had discussed potential replacements. Neither report is a club announcement, a confirmed board-set deadline or a direct statement from Wagner. Treat them as attributed media reports, not established club decisions. Football Insider’s report and TEAMtalk’s report describe their respective claims.

What Birmingham’s official coverage establishes
Birmingham City’s official men’s team news index included Davies in manager-related coverage through 21 September 2026. That confirms how the club presented him in that dated material; it does not confirm his status after that date or amount to a guarantee that he would remain in the job. The club’s men’s news index is the relevant official record.
There is no newer direct Wagner statement on Davies’ future established here by 8 October 2026. The available evidence therefore separates into three categories: Wagner’s dated public backing in October 2025, later pressure reports attributed to unnamed sources, and official club coverage that listed Davies through 21 September 2026. None of those later items is equivalent to a fresh owner statement or a formal club decision.

Why Wagner’s earlier praise is context, not a current guarantee
In June 2025, Wagner said promotion to the Premier League the following season was Birmingham’s goal and described Davies as “exceptional.” The BBC reported that Birmingham had broken the EFL League One points record in 2024–25 and spent £25 million after relegation. Those remarks help explain the club’s ambitions and expectations at the time, but do not establish Wagner’s current view. The BBC reported Wagner’s comments on the club’s ambition.

BBC Sport reported on 11 February 2026 that Wagner had suffered a stroke and would step back from daily responsibilities for a period. A Birmingham City update distributed on 30 July said he was making strong progress in recovery and that Knighthead remained committed to the club’s long-term strategy. The club’s recovery update said: “Tom remains closely connected to the club, and we all look forward to welcoming him back.” Neither item states a position on Davies’ job. BBC Sport’s report on Wagner’s recovery and the club’s 30 July update address his health and Knighthead’s commitment, not the manager’s future.
