First, confirm the new APY, when it took effect, and whether an introductory offer ended. Then compare the account’s full terms—not just its rate—with alternatives, and ask your current institution whether it can match a better offer. Keep money you may need soon accessible, and check deposit-insurance coverage before moving a large balance.
Confirm what changed before deciding
A savings-account rate can change when the account has a variable rate. The account disclosure should explain whether the rate is variable and describe the terms for changes. The FDIC’s Truth in Savings examination guidance says changes to a variable rate and its corresponding APY are excepted from the general advance-notice requirement that applies to certain changes in disclosed terms that may reduce APY or otherwise adversely affect a consumer. That is not a promise that every rate cut will be handled the same way: check the terms for your account and the notice you received.

Regulation DD disclosures are intended to help consumers compare deposit products. The Federal Reserve’s summary of Regulation DD explains that variable-rate disclosures alert consumers to possible rate changes and their frequency. Use the current disclosure and account information rather than assuming the rate you opened with still applies.
- Find the current APY and effective date. Check the account page, statement, rate notice, or current disclosure. Distinguish the annual percentage yield (APY) from the interest rate if both are shown.
- Check whether an introductory offer ended. Look for the promotion’s end date and the rate that applies afterward. A promotional rate and the ongoing variable rate are different terms.
- Review other terms that may have changed. Check minimums, fees, withdrawal or transfer conditions, and requirements to earn interest or avoid charges.
- Ask the institution to explain the change if it is unclear. Request the applicable rate, effective date, and account terms in writing or point to the current disclosure.
A rate reduction alone does not establish why a particular institution made the change. Do not infer a bank-specific reason from a general economic event; the institution’s own explanation and account terms are the relevant evidence for your account.

Compare the whole account, not only the APY
A higher advertised APY can be less useful if it comes with fees, a balance requirement you cannot meet, limited access, or a short promotional period. The FDIC advises consumers to weigh what they value and compare institutions’ benefits and costs rather than letting a short-term offer determine the decision. Its March 2024 guidance, “Thinking About Moving to Another Bank?”, also recommends discussing options with the current institution.
| What to compare | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| APY and rate type | Current APY; whether it is variable or promotional; and, for an offer, when the promotional rate ends. | The headline rate may not be the rate you keep earning. |
| Fees and balance rules | Monthly or other account fees; minimum opening balance; minimum balance to earn interest; and conditions for avoiding fees. | A fee or unmet requirement can offset the benefit of a higher APY. |
| Access to money | How quickly you can withdraw or transfer funds, plus any stated limits or restrictions. | Cash intended for an emergency or an upcoming bill needs to be available when required. |
| Deposit insurance | Whether the institution is insured and how your deposits there count toward the applicable coverage limit. | Moving money can change how much you hold at one insured bank and in a particular ownership category. |
| Practical effort | What is needed to open, fund, and maintain the account, and whether its service and access meet your needs. | A rate difference is only one part of the decision and may not justify an account that is hard to use. |
Rates, fees, and promotional conditions change, so compare the actual current terms offered to you rather than relying on an old rate list or a general claim about which account is best. No single rate is established here as the current market leader.

Estimate what the rate difference means for your balance
Translate an APY change into an approximate annual dollar difference before taking on the work of switching. As a simplified illustration, if a hypothetical $10,000 balance earned 4% APY for a full year, its yield would be about $400; at 3% APY for a full year, about $300. The difference is about $100 for that year. These are illustrative rates, not current offers, and the illustration assumes the balance stays in place for the whole year; actual earnings depend on the balance over time and the account’s terms.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a rough estimate, multiply the balance you expect to keep in the account by the difference between the two APYs, expressed as a decimal. For example, a one-percentage-point difference is 0.01. Use the balance you realistically expect to maintain, not a temporary peak. Then account for any fees, minimum-balance rules, promotional expiration, and how long you expect to keep the money there. This estimate is for comparing options, not a promise of a particular interest payment.

Ask your current institution before switching
If you find a stronger offer, contact your current bank or credit union and ask whether it can improve your rate or point you to another account option. The FDIC’s March 2024 advice is direct: “If you notice a better offer or rate from a competitor, ask if your institution can match it.” The request does not guarantee a match, but it gives you a chance to learn whether staying has a competitive option without opening and funding another account.
Make the question specific: give the competing APY, ask whether it is promotional or ongoing, and ask what conditions apply. If the institution offers a different product, compare that product’s fees, minimums, access, and rate conditions against both your current account and the alternative. A quoted match is useful only if you understand how long it lasts and what you must do to qualify.

Choose among staying, switching, or using a CD
Stay in the current account
Staying can make sense when the reduced rate is still acceptable for your goals, the account’s access or service is valuable, or the alternatives’ terms erase much of their rate advantage. It may also be the practical choice when moving money would complicate bill payments or emergency access. Decide based on the expected benefit after fees and conditions, not on the fact that the rate changed by itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSwitch to another savings account
Switching may be worth considering when another insured deposit account offers a meaningfully better rate on terms you can meet, and it provides the access you need. Before initiating a transfer, confirm the new account’s current rate, minimums, fees, and any promotional end date. Plan the move so money needed for scheduled expenses remains available; do not assume a transfer will be immediate.

Consider a CD only for money you can leave untouched
The FDIC describes a traditional FDIC-insured savings account as a place to save that allows easy withdrawals and earns interest. Certificates of deposit (CDs) may have different access terms: the FDIC’s “Saving for the Unexpected and Your Future” says CDs generally impose an early-withdrawal penalty, so check the institution’s fee terms before committing. A higher stated rate does not compensate for a restriction if you need the money early.
Keep the purpose of each portion of savings in view. Money for near-term costs or an emergency is different from money you are confident you will not need during a CD’s term. The FDIC page reports that financial experts generally recommend keeping at least six months of living expenses in a federally insured product such as a savings account or CD. This is the FDIC’s description of expert guidance, not a universal rule for every household; consider your own obligations and access needs when deciding how much cash to keep readily available.
Verify deposit insurance before moving a balance
For eligible deposits at an FDIC-insured bank, the FDIC’s deposit-insurance guidance states a limit of $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Accounts in the same ownership category at one bank may be aggregated when coverage is determined, so the limit does not automatically apply separately to every account. FDIC insurance covers eligible deposits, not non-deposit investment products. The FDIC page was last updated April 1, 2024; verify current rules and how your ownership categories apply before moving a large balance.
Before transferring, confirm that the receiving institution is FDIC-insured and consider all deposits you already hold there in the relevant ownership category. If the move would leave your total above the applicable limit, do not assume opening another account at that same bank creates separate coverage. The coverage question depends on the depositor, insured bank, and ownership category—not simply the number of account numbers.
A practical decision sequence
- Document the change. Record your current APY, its effective date, and whether a promotion expired. Keep the relevant notice or disclosure.
- Set the job for the money. Identify the amount needed for upcoming expenses and emergency access, separately from funds you can leave untouched.
- Compare real alternatives. Use the table above to check current APYs and full account terms. Exclude offers whose conditions you cannot meet or whose access does not fit your needs.
- Ask for a match or alternative. Contact your current institution and clarify the duration and conditions of any offer it makes.
- Check insurance and operational details. Confirm the new institution’s insurance status, evaluate aggregation of existing deposits, and understand the steps needed to open and fund the account.
- Move only the amount that fits. Preserve access to near-term and emergency money. If considering a CD for another portion, check its term and early-withdrawal penalty first.
- Recheck terms later. Because savings rates can change, review the account’s current APY and disclosures periodically and when you receive a rate notice.
These steps are U.S.-specific where they discuss Regulation DD and FDIC insurance. Readers elsewhere should use their local regulator’s deposit-account disclosure rules and the applicable deposit-guarantee scheme rather than assuming U.S. protections apply.
