Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your Bitcoin is below what you paid, the loss alone does not tell you whether to sell or hold. Reassess whether the position still fits your financial needs, ability to tolerate further losses, time horizon, and overall portfolio. If you sell, check the U.S. tax and recordkeeping implications first. This is general U.S.-oriented information, not individualized financial or tax advice.
Start with the decision you face now—not your purchase price
Your original cost can make a loss feel like a problem that must be “fixed,” but it does not determine what Bitcoin is worth to you today or what you should do next. Focus on whether the position still makes sense in your circumstances, rather than on trying to get back to break-even.
Ask yourself:
- Would I choose to own this amount of Bitcoin today if I did not already have it?
- Could I withstand a further large decline without putting near-term bills, savings goals, or other needs at risk?
- Has the reason I bought Bitcoin changed?
- Does Bitcoin now make up an outsized share of my investments?
The SEC says diversification—spreading investments across different assets—can lower overall portfolio risk. It also says an appropriate asset mix depends on a person’s risk tolerance and investment timeframe. Those considerations can help frame your choice, but they do not predict Bitcoin’s future price or prescribe a single answer for every investor. SEC: Investor.gov Tips for 2026

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
| What to consider | How it affects the choice |
|---|---|
| Further downside | Consider whether you can tolerate another substantial decline without jeopardizing financial needs. |
| Time horizon and cash needs | Money you may need soon raises different concerns from money you can leave invested for a longer period. |
| Portfolio concentration | Consider Bitcoin’s share of your investments and whether your overall mix is diversified. |
| Tax and records | A sale or other disposition may realize a gain or loss for U.S. federal tax purposes, and you may need records to calculate it. |
| What you own | If your exposure is through a broker or a security-related product rather than direct Bitcoin, check that product’s official documents for its specific terms. |
Reducing a position is also an option to evaluate; the decision need not be framed as an all-or-nothing bet on what Bitcoin will do next. If you hold through a product rather than directly, do not assume its fees, custody arrangements, or risks are the same as those of direct ownership: consult the product’s official documents.
Know when a loss counts for U.S. federal tax purposes
The IRS treats digital assets as property for U.S. tax purposes. A drop in the quoted price while you still hold Bitcoin is not, by itself, a completed sale or automatically deductible loss. The Taxpayer Advocate Service explains that a loss generally requires a closed and completed transaction, such as a sale or exchange. Its examples also say a frozen account or assets involved in bankruptcy proceedings do not, in the described circumstances, create a deductible loss before such a transaction. Unusual situations—including theft, abandonment, or insolvency—can raise different questions, so do not assume those examples settle every case. If you sell Bitcoin for U.S. dollars
IRS guidance describes the calculation as the amount realized compared with your adjusted basis. Amount realized includes cash received and the fair market value of services received to effect the sale, reduced by allocable digital-asset transaction costs. Such costs can include transaction or gas fees, transfer taxes, and commissions. Your particular tax result depends on your facts. IRS: Frequently asked questions on digital asset transactions
Keep records that let you work out your basis
Save purchase confirmations, dates, amounts, wallet-transfer records, sale details, and fee records. Do not assume a broker statement will include everything needed to establish your basis. In a January 28, 2026 reminder, the IRS said most broker statements for digital-asset transactions in 2025 will not include basis. It also said taxpayers must report related income, gains, or losses whether or not they receive Form 1099-DA. IRS: Reminders for taxpayers about digital assets

A loss can make promises of a quick recovery especially tempting. The SEC identifies guaranteed high returns, unsolicited pitches, unlicensed sellers, pressure to act immediately, and offers that sound too good to be true as warning signs. Crypto-related scams may also involve social or messaging contact, pressure to send crypto, or demands for extra fees or taxes to withdraw funds.
