What to Do When One Stock Becomes Too Large a Share of Your Portfolio

A stock that grows into a large share of your portfolio can increase company-specific risk. Learn how to measure total exposure, set a goal-based target, compare selling with redirecting contributions, review diversification and plan for U.S. tax consequences.

Reduce a single-stock concentration deliberately rather than reacting to a price move. First measure the stock’s share of your total investable assets, including indirect exposure through funds and employer benefits. Then compare that exposure with your goals, time horizon and ability to tolerate a company-specific loss. If it no longer fits your plan, choose a rebalancing method—selling some shares, directing new money elsewhere, or buying underweight assets—after checking taxes, fees and the quality of the diversification you will add.

There is no regulator-approved percentage that automatically makes a position “too large.” The right response depends on your circumstances and on how much of the same company or sector appears elsewhere in your portfolio. The sequence below turns that judgment into a practical decision.

Why a large single-stock position matters

Concentration risk is the possibility that losses are amplified because a large portion of your holdings depends on one investment, asset class or market segment. If that company suffers an earnings miss, product failure, lawsuit, regulatory action or other business shock, the stock can fall while unrelated holdings do not. A concentrated position can therefore make your overall result depend on one company’s outcome rather than on the broad mix you intended. FINRA explains concentration risk and the ways it can arise.

Concentration is not limited to a stock you intentionally selected. It can build when a share price rises faster than the rest of your portfolio, when an employer pays you in shares or options, when you repeatedly add to a favorite company, or when several investments hold the same company or sector. Illiquid assets and correlated securities can add to the same economic exposure even when the account statement lists different tickers.

A gain does not prove that the position is safe, and a loss does not by itself dictate an immediate sale. The useful question is whether the exposure still matches the job your portfolio must do—fund a near-term purchase, support retirement, preserve a reserve, or pursue long-term growth—and whether you could financially and emotionally withstand a severe company-specific decline.

Step 1: Measure your real exposure

Start with a complete inventory, not just the account containing the individual shares. Calculate the stock’s current market value divided by your total investable assets. Use current values and include taxable accounts, retirement accounts and other investment accounts that form part of the plan you are evaluating.

Look through funds and workplace benefits

  • List every mutual fund, exchange-traded fund and target-date fund you own, then inspect its current top holdings and sector weights.
  • Identify employer stock in retirement plans, restricted shares, options and units that have not yet vested but may create future exposure.
  • Check whether a broad index fund owns the same company. That indirect holding may be modest, but several funds can make the combined amount material.
  • Include related companies, a narrowly focused sector fund and other assets whose value is likely to move with the stock.

Fund count is not the same as diversification. Two funds can contain many of the same largest holdings, and a fund named for one sector can remain highly dependent on that sector. FINRA and the SEC both advise reviewing underlying holdings and overlap rather than relying on labels alone. See SEC Investor.gov’s allocation and diversification guidance and FINRA’s concentration-risk guidance.

Separate the measurements that answer different questions

  • Percentage exposure: the stock’s value as a share of the whole portfolio.
  • Dollar exposure: how many dollars would be affected by a company-specific move.
  • Economic exposure: the stock plus funds, compensation and related assets that may respond to the same news.
  • Liquidity exposure: how much of the position you might need to sell to meet a cash need or tax bill.

Write down these figures and the date measured. Market prices change, so a percentage that looks acceptable today can drift without any new purchase.

Step 2: Decide what “too large” means for your plan

The sources used here do not establish a universal single-stock limit, and neither a particular percentage nor a fund count can answer the question for every investor. Set a target by connecting the exposure to your financial plan.

Match the position to time horizon

Money needed soon generally has less capacity for a large, volatile company bet than money earmarked for a goal decades away. A portfolio supporting a house down payment or a planned withdrawal may require a more predictable mix than a long-term account that can remain invested through several market cycles. The SEC says allocation decisions should reflect time horizon and risk tolerance; its asset-allocation guide explains those factors.

Test your ability and willingness to take a loss

Consider both the financial and behavioral consequences of a sharp decline. Could you pay bills, maintain an emergency reserve and continue your plan if the stock lost a substantial portion of its value? Would a large paper loss cause you to sell at the worst moment? A position that is tolerable on a spreadsheet may be unsuitable if it would change essential spending or make disciplined investing impossible.

Check why you own it

Document the original reason for owning the stock, the assumptions that still hold and the conditions that would change your mind. If the position grew solely because the price rose, restoring a previously chosen allocation may be more appropriate than making a new forecast. If you bought it to meet a specific goal or because of an employer plan, account restrictions and timing may affect the route to a lower exposure.

Step 3: Choose a rebalancing method

Rebalancing means returning a portfolio toward an allocation selected for your goals, rather than chasing whichever category recently performed best. The SEC lists selling overweight holdings, buying underweight investments and redirecting new contributions as possible mechanics. Compare them before placing an order.

Method How directly it reduces company risk Tax and fee considerations Important limitation
Sell part of the stock and reinvest proceeds Fast and direct: both the share count and dollars tied to the company fall. A taxable account may realize a gain or loss; commissions, spreads or other transaction charges may apply. Requires a sale decision and a plan for where the proceeds go.
Redirect new contributions Gradual: the stock’s percentage can decline as other assets receive new money. Usually avoids realizing a gain on the existing shares; new purchases still have their own expenses. The stock’s dollar exposure does not fall, and progress depends on contribution size and market movements.
Buy underweight assets without selling Can lower the percentage by increasing the denominator, but does not reduce company-specific dollars. Purchases may incur fund expenses, spreads or commissions; no sale means no immediate realized gain on the stock. May leave a still-large risk and can distort the plan if purchases are made without a target.

These are implementation choices, not a universal prescription. Before acting, compare how quickly each method changes exposure, whether it creates taxable transactions, what fees apply, whether the new holdings truly diversify company and sector risk, and whether the result fits your time horizon and risk tolerance. The SEC specifically says to consider transaction fees and tax consequences when selecting a rebalancing method. Read its Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing.

How to execute the decision

  1. Set a written target. Record the desired range for the individual stock and the broader allocation you want for stocks, bonds, cash and other categories. A range can reduce the temptation to trade for every small price movement.
  2. Choose the account and lots. In a taxable account, note each purchase date, number of shares, adjusted basis and unrealized gain or loss. In a retirement account, check the plan’s investment menu, distribution rules and any restrictions before moving money.
  3. Select the least disruptive route that reaches the target. You might sell in stages, redirect contributions, or combine both. Staging can spread market and tax effects, but it also leaves the concentration in place longer; do not treat it as a guarantee of a better price.
  4. Place trades consistent with the plan. Review order type, estimated spread and settlement details. Reinvest proceeds into assets that fill documented gaps rather than into another narrowly concentrated position.
  5. Recalculate after trades settle. Include indirect holdings and update the percentage. Record the date, prices, fees and tax lots so the next review starts with accurate information.
  6. Schedule a review. A calendar review or a threshold-based review can prompt action when the allocation moves materially away from its target. The SEC describes rebalancing as restoring an intended mix, not as a response to every market move.

What diversification can—and cannot—fix

A broad mutual fund or ETF may spread money across many companies, industries and, depending on the fund, asset classes. That can reduce the effect of one company’s failure. Diversification does not eliminate market losses, guarantee a return or make every fund suitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the new holding

  • Read the current top-ten holdings and their combined weight.
  • Check sector, geographic and asset-class exposure.
  • Compare the fund’s holdings with your existing funds to find overlap.
  • Review the expense ratio and any purchase, redemption or account fees.
  • Confirm that the fund’s objective and risk level fit the allocation you wrote down.

A sector-focused fund can simply replace one company concentration with a sector concentration. The SEC’s diversification guidance notes that broad funds can hold many investments, while a narrowly focused fund may not provide the diversification an investor expects. See the SEC guide.

Tax issues before selling

In a U.S. taxable account, a sale generally produces a capital gain or loss based on proceeds and adjusted basis. The holding period matters: under IRS Topic 409, property held more than one year is generally treated as long-term, while property held one year or less is generally short-term. The exact holding-period calculation can be affected by the acquisition and disposal dates and by special rules, so verify the lots involved.

For tax year 2025, IRS Publication 544 lists maximum individual capital-gain rates of 0%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 28% for specified categories. Those are rate ceilings for particular types of gain, not a statement of what your sale will owe. The applicable result depends on the character of the gain, filing status, taxable income, deductions, losses and other facts for that tax year. Topic 409’s 0% and 15% thresholds also vary by filing status and year; do not use a threshold outside its stated context.

Reporting and cash-flow consequences

The IRS says most capital transactions are reported on Form 8949 and summarized on Schedule D when applicable. A taxable capital gain may also create an estimated-tax obligation, depending on your circumstances. Keep trade confirmations and basis records, especially when shares came from an employer plan or were transferred between accounts.

Before selling, estimate the gain by lot and consider whether realizing losses elsewhere, spreading sales across tax years or using a tax-advantaged account changes the outcome. These are planning questions, not guarantees. State and local taxes, wash-sale rules for loss sales, restricted-stock rules and employer equity compensation can materially change the analysis. A tax professional can apply the rules to your facts; the SEC also notes that professional help may identify ways to minimize transaction and tax costs.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using an arbitrary percentage as a rule

No cited regulator sets one universal threshold for a “too large” single-stock position. Replace a borrowed number with a target tied to goals, risk tolerance, liquidity needs and total economic exposure.

Counting funds instead of holdings

Owning several funds can still leave the same company or sector dominant. Download or review each fund’s holdings and add overlapping weights.

Only buying more investments

Adding underweight assets lowers the percentage but does not lower the dollars exposed to the company. If your objective is to reduce the potential loss from that company, include a sale or acknowledge that the risk remains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring taxes until after the order

A profitable taxable sale can create a liability and reporting work. Identify basis, holding period and estimated tax before trading, then retain records.

Replacing one concentration with another

Moving from an individual stock into a single-sector fund may leave correlated risk largely intact. Check the new holding’s diversification, overlap and expenses.

Trading from fear or euphoria

A sudden price move can make a position look urgent. Use the written target and review schedule, while acting promptly if the concentration threatens a near-term obligation or violates a risk limit you already set.

When individualized advice is worth the cost

Consider a qualified financial or tax professional when the position is a large share of your net worth, the shares came from employer compensation, selling could produce a substantial gain, you have several account types, or a transaction would affect a near-term tax payment or spending need. Bring the inventory, tax-lot records, fund holdings, goals, time horizon and proposed target. Ask the professional to explain fees, conflicts, tax assumptions and what would cause the plan to be revisited.
